Academic Skills Development Services

Academic Skills Development provides a range of support services for all students and staff. These services include:

Workshops

Academic Skills Development runs generic and targeted and drop-in workshops for students.

Generic workshops are held in the Orientation period in Sessions One and Two and cover a range of topics related to introducing new students to university study. These workshops are free and available to all students.

Targeted workshops are organised by arrangement with staff in particular courses and units and are designed specifically for students in those courses and units.

Drop-in workshops are for small groups of students studying the same unit or units. They are held either at pre-scheduled times or by arrangement with students.

(For academic staff: If you would like to have workshop specifically for your unit or have an ASD lecturer talk to your class group or a group of students from a class, please contact the ASD liaison person for your School to discuss your requirements.)

Orientation workshops, free 'topic specific' workshop and workshops by request are available.

PASS (Peer Assisted Study Sessions)

PASS stands for Peer Assisted Study Sessions. PASS study sessions are held each week of each Session in selected units (Check unit Blackboard sites to see if PASS is available in a unit). Study sessions commence from Week Two. They last for one hour. The sessions are run by PASS Leaders, who are current SCU students who have previously studied the unit.

Individual and group appointments

Academic Skills Development offers individual and small group support for students. Individual support, however, is limited and an appointment cannot always be guaranteed. Advance booking is necessary for an individual appointment. We also offer review of assignments by email. Students requesting an email review of an assignment should send a draft of their assignment to us five working days prior to the due date.

Turnitin

Turnitin is a web-based text-matching system that finds similarities between submitted assignments and other documents. These documents include other student assignments, books, web pages, and articles from newspapers, magazines and academic journals.

Ask ASD

We have an Ask ASD forum on the Discussion Boards of a number of key units across the university. These are monitored regularly by ASD staff and provide an opportunity for quick feedback on academic skills questions you might have. (Note: If you have questions about the unit content you should ask your lecturer or tutor.)

Embedding academic skills into unit materials

We offer advice and support for academic staff who would like to embed/integrate academic skills into unit materials. Please contact your school's ASD liaison person.
