Basis of Advanced Standing (credit or exemption) offered by Schools

Advanced Standing on the Basis of previous study

SCU Schools and Colleges welcome applications for Advanced Standing on the basis of previous and discipline related tertiary study, completed within the last ten years, unless otherwise stated within the 'General Award Rules' - Coursework Awards: General Provisions of Advanced Standing or the 'Specific Award Rules' for a degree, which are located in the SCU Handbook. This information is also accessible via the Undergraduate or Postgraduate Course Options by checking the 'Specific Award Rules' and 'Advanced Standing' sections of the Course Sheet.

If SCU has established formal articulation arrangements with your previous educational institute, your qualification may already have been assessed for advanced standing. In this case, you may apply for an advanced standing precedent. Try searching for your completed course in our Search for Advanced Standing to immediately identify the amount of credit that you may be granted and the applicable 'Advanced Standing Precedent Code' to record on your application.

If your search is successful, and you will apply for admission into an SCU degree as an International student , or via the NSW Tertiary Admissions Centre (UAC) or the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC), print and attach to the Advanced Standing Application Form a copy of the 'Advanced Standing Search Results' and proof of your completed study. How to lodge the form and supporting documents correctly.

Alternatively, if you are applying for admission into an SCU degree online and directly with SCU, enter the Advanced Standing 'Precedent Reference Code' (which is listed on the 'Advanced Standing Search Results') into the corresponding field in the SCU online 'Application for Admission' and upload proof of your completed study.

If the previous tertiary institute or course is not listed in the Search for Advanced Standing you should still apply for Advanced Standing when you apply for admission into the SCU degree as all advanced standing applications are equitably considered and individually assessed.

Advanced Standing on the basis of current expertise or professional level experience

Some SCU Schools and Colleges consider applications for Advanced Standing on the basis of formal and informal learning experiences gained in a professional or voluntary capacity within the community or a workplace. To demonstrate appropriate breadth and depth of practical experience within an industry, minimum professional level experience timeframes may apply. Some experience may need to be at a supervisory level or higher and may exclude experience attained as a result of participation in an industry placement program or completion of Internship Units of study. Before applying for Advanced Standing on this basis, check the degree rules and (below) that the School or College is able to accept your application. You should also consider the following questions:

  1. What informal or on-the-job learning, training or professional development have I done that might be relevant to units within the SCU course I wish to study?
  2. What other social activities or community based tasks or projects have I done that are also relevant to units within the SCU course I wish to study?
  3. How recently did I learn or utilise my skills and knowledge - are they current?
  4. How can I prove I possess this knowledge, can consistently perform these skills, can critically analyse issues to solve problems and can transfer these to similar tasks and settings?

If you are unsure of the School or College to which you should refer questions, go to SCU Course Options, select the SCU degree you wish to study and scroll within the Course Summary to identify the School or College. Alternatively, contact Student Services:
