Applying for Advanced Standing (credit or exemption)

At Southern Cross University your previous study or professional level experience may help you cut months off your SCU degree.

STEP 1 - Apply on time

You should apply for Advanced Standing at the same time as you apply for admission into the SCU degree as the amount and type of Advanced Standing awarded will determine your study plan. If you are an International student, studying in Australia, this means being pre-assessed for Advanced Standing (credit) at the time of lodging your Application for Admission to the International Office.

If you apply for Advanced Standing during your studies you should submit your application for Advanced Standing at least one month before the start of the relevant study period. Please remember, all requests for Advanced Standing must be completed before your final study period. This will ensure that your course completion and graduation are not unnecessarily delayed.

STEP 2 - Check the degree and School or College requirements

Check that the basis on which you are applying for Advanced Standing aligns with that stipulated for the degree and by the relevant School or College. See Degree, School or College requirements.

STEP 3 - Search for an Advanced Standing Precedent (if applicable)

If SCU has established formal articulation arrangements with your previous educational institute, your qualification may already have been assessed for advanced standing. Try searching for your completed course in our Search for Advanced Standing to immediately identify the amount of Advanced Standing and applicable 'Advanced Standing Precedent Code'.

If the previous tertiary institute or course is not listed in the Search for Advanced Standing you should still apply for Advanced Standing when you apply for admission into the SCU degree as all advanced standing applications are equitably considered and individually assessed.

STEP 4 - How to apply

If your Search for Advanced Standing was successful and you will apply for admission into an SCU degree online and directly with SCU, enter the Advanced Standing 'Precedent Reference Code' (which is listed on the 'Advanced Standing Search Results') into the corresponding field in the SCU online 'Application for Admission'.

If applying for admission into an SCU degree via the NSW Tertiary Admissions Centre (UAC) or the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) or as an International student, studying in Australia, download, print and complete the Advanced Standing Application Form

If you are an International student studying with SCU at an overseas location you should obtain an application for advanced standing from your local administration officer or from within your 'Student Information Guide'. SCU Contact Details for International Students Studying Overseas

Be sure to:

  1. Read the form carefully.
  2. Print clearly and neatly, in English, using black pen, completing all relevant sections in full.
  3. Initial and date any change that you make to the form.
  4. Sign and date the 'DECLARATION'.
  5. Keep a copy of the completed form for your records.

Illegible or incomplete applications cannot be processed and will be returned with a request for clarification or further information.

STEP 4 - Provide supporting documents

If your Search for Advanced Standing was successful and you are applying for admission into an SCU degree online and directly with SCU, you will need to upload proof of your completed study.

If applying for Advanced Standing using an Advanced Standing Application form, securely attach documents verifying your completed study, professional level experience or expertise and lodge these with the relevant School, College, Shared Services Centre or overseas location.
