2012 SCU Alumni of the Year Awards - nominations open

Southern Cross University Alumni boasts more than 46,000 members in many different fields of work, throughout Australia and the world. Alumni members range from new graduates who are commencing their career, through to business and community leaders applying their education and expertise to lead industry and make positive change in our global community.

Southern Cross University's Alumni of the Year Awards recognise and honour the outstanding achievements of Southern Cross University Alumni, whilst highlighting exceptional leadership, service to community and innovation.

Nominations are now open for Southern Cross University's 2012 'Outstanding Alumnus of the Year' and 'Young Alumnus of the Year' awards. SCU's 2012 Alumni of the Year Awards, will be presented this year at a gala event on August 24.

Reunion Invitation - Bachelor of Business May 1982 graduating class

The Bachelor of Business graduating class of May 1982 are holding a 30 year reunion over the Easter weekend in April 2012 in Lismore. All staff and students from the class of 1979 to 1981 are invited to join the group as they travel from all parts of Australia and overseas to get together to share their career and life stories.

$32 million federal funding boost to Southern Cross University

Southern Cross University has secured $32 million in federal government funding. The successful bid, against the federal government's Structural Adjustment Fund, reflects the University's commitment to create new pathways to higher education and enhance the learning experience for all students throughout its footprint.

A key feature funded through the bid is a state-of-the-art Personal Learning Environment (PLE). The PLE will provide the technology for students to access quality learning experiences, combining online and face to face delivery wherever students are located throughout the University's footprint. It will provide a standardised level of audio-visual capabilities and multi-location interactive delivery.[more]

SCU Alumnus George Makuac Mading Mou

Sudanese refugee out to make a difference

After fleeing Sudan at the age of 16, leaving his mother and nine siblings behind, George Makuac Mading Mou is now helping other refugees struggling to adjust to life in a new country and is hoping one day to return to his homeland.

George completed a Bachelor of Social Science from Southern Cross University's Coffs Harbour campus in 2011 and this year is undertaking a Master of Community Development (Emergency Management).

He came to Coffs Harbour in 2009, after spending around 12 years in a refugee camp in Uganda. [more]

Quality Administration of Medications Workshop

This professional development seminar on the quality administration of medications will focus on the identification, avoidance and management of medication errors, pharmacokinetics and dynamics, and adverse drug reactions, including interactions with herbal products, in medical and surgical nursing practice settings. The legal, policy and practice aspects of medication incidents will also be discussed.

Presenter, Kierrynn Davis RN, PhD, is an outstanding authority in pharmacotherapeutics and the ethical and legal aspects of nursing. Kierrynn is a registered nurse, and has a Bachelor of Science degree, a Master of Science degree, and a PhD in Humanities. Her main area of interest is in improving nursing practice through research and relevant education.

Childbirth education plays an important role in preparing families for this life-changing event. HypnoBirthing is a childbirth education program that is recognised worldwide as a leading program in the field of childbirth education and preparation. HypnoBirthing is now in 32 countries with fully certified and trained professional practitioners assisting couples in their desire to have a normal, calm and often pain free birth.

Presenter, Anthea Thomas CHt. HBCE, HBFC, is a passionate and focused health professional dedicated to supporting families in conception, pregnancy, birthing and parenting. She is a qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist, and is a HypnoBirthingFertility Specialist and Childbirth Educator, certified with the HypnoBirthing Institute. Anthea is a director and founding member of the Australian Birth and Parenting Network.
