In this month's issue of Alumni Matters, it's my pleasure to say hello to all our current Alumni and offer a warm welcome to new Alumni. My name is Dan Sloan and I've recently commenced as Alumni Relations Manager.
An SCU Alumnus myself, I'm anticipating connecting with SCU Alumni and stakeholders right around the world. As a first point of call, I'm interested in your thoughts about our current Alumni program and would appreciate your suggestions and feedback via our 2012 Alumni Survey. This survey is a great opportunity for you to help guide our Alumni Program. Feel free to also email me any suggestions or comments at any time to us at alumni@scu.edu.au.
In this addition I'm pleased to highlight some upcoming opportunities at the Gold Coast including the Michael Kirby Lecturer and Dinner featuring a keynote address by Malcolm Turnbull and a series of seminars on navigating the audit culture presented by the SCU School of Arts and Social Sciences.

SCU Alumni of the Year Awards - tickets are now available for purchase online
Southern Cross University's 2012 Alumni of the Year Awards recognise and honour the outstanding achievements of Alumni, whilst highlighting exceptional leadership, service to community and innovation.
SCU's 2012 Alumni of the Year Awards will be presented on Friday 24 August at The Bistro Function Centre, Bayshore Drive, Byron Bay. SCU Alumni, staff and partners are invited to join us at this year's gala event. Your invitation can be found here and we also offer you the ability to purchase tickets online.
2012 Alumni Survey
Southern Cross University invites all Alumni to undertake the 2012 Alumni Survey. This survey is a great opportunity for you to tell the SCU Alumni team what you think and to help us deliver an SCU Alumni Program that you enjoy. Alumni who undertake the survey, and nominate to provide their details also have the opportunity to go into a draw for one lucky person to win an iPad2.
The competition closes 31 July 2012, and we will be sending out a reminder to all Alumni encouraging you to take the survey before that date. We will also be providing the results of the survey back to you as soon as it is feasible later in the year. Graduation ceremony marks a milestone for Gold Coast campus
Southern Cross University marked another milestone in the development of its Gold Coast campus with the first graduation ceremony held at the Gold Coast and Tweed Heads on May 5.
The ceremony, held at the Twin Town Services Club, was the first for the University in the region. Previously, students had travelled to Lismore for graduation. Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Lee said it was an important event, signifying the University's growing commitment to providing new education opportunities for the Gold Coast and Tweeds Heads community.
"I congratulate all the graduands and look forward to future graduation ceremonies as we continue to expand our facilities at the Gold Coast campus," Professor Lee said. [more]
At 97, grandmaster Allan ages by degree
In a world of almost seven billion people, 97-year-old Southern Cross University graduate Allan Stewart stands alone.
Not only does Allan already hold the Guinness World Records title for being the 'World's Oldest Graduate' - a title he earned after graduating with a law degree aged 91 - but he has now surpassed it.
Allan graduated with his Master of Clinical Science (Complementary Medicine) at a ceremony at SCU's Lismore campus on Friday, May 4. It was his fourth degree.
"I think I can hang up my mortar board and academic robes after this one - although I said that after my last degree and then I got bored. I have so much time on my hands these days and I like to keep mentally active," the nonagenarian said.[more]
