About this Course

This course is a structured pathway that provides a 12-unit MBA or a 16-unit MBA (Advanced). The MBA develops the business knowledge and practical skills to help graduates advance their careers in today’s competitive global markets. Students gain a broad understanding of contemporary management operations and learn industry-relevant skills and solutions to complex business situations. Professional experience is enhanced through practical assessment activities in leadership, problem solving and communication skills. The MBA provides the option to study broadly across a comprehensive suite of business disciplines and the opportunity to specialise. To extend their MBA, students can study an MBA (Advanced), which offers further diversification, or a second specialisation. The MBA (Advanced) also enables students to add a significant research component to their MBA.

To qualify for the Master of Business Administration a total of 12 units must be completed. There are three trimesters each year. Full-time students normally study four units per trimester to complete the course in one year. Part time students usually study one to two units per trimester completing the course in two years or more. Each unit is designed to take up to 150 learning hours (10 to 12 hours per week) to complete over a trimester.

Teaching Methods

Study by distance education
The distance education study option is highly interactive and strives to promote collaboration and a sense of community. In addition to texts, readings and study guides, students have access library services, receive a combination of podcast or video-linked lectures, electronic study materials, and will be invited to participate in online workshops, online discussion forums and virtual classes. The method of teaching may vary from unit to unit.

Study on-campus
The on-campus study option is designed to maximise learning opportunities and ensure students receive individual attention from their lecturers. Classes are run weekly and are normally of three hours’ duration. On-campus students have unlimited internet access and can connect with the University’s library catalogues, online full-text journal databases and online book and article request service.

Learning Resources

MySCU is a student’s point of entry to a range of online services and resources that support study and student life. The portal includes unit learning sites and information sites where students can access resources, communication tools and useful links that are integral to their studies.

The web-based program Blackboard Collaborate delivers advanced on-line learning environments for students and lecturers to communicate and collaborate through virtual meeting spaces and classrooms. They can share files, presentations, and applications. If the session is recorded, students can view it afterwards.

Learning materials include the provision of unit information guides, study guides and books of readings. Students may need to purchase or access prescribed text books.

The SCU library provides a wide range of services including librarian assistance, print and electronic resources, a document delivery service, catalogues, databases, ebooks, ereadings, and full-text journal literature.

The Academic Skills Development team supports student learning by offering online and on-campus academic skills workshops, email, phone, and one-on-one support.

Assessment Methods

The course incorporates progressive assessment and examinations. Students are assessed in each unit on the basis of written and oral assignments. These may be business reports, case studies, presentations, research studies and /or plans. Full details of assignments are contained in the study guide for each unit.

Equipment and Facilities

Southern Cross University provides students with modern well-equipped teaching spaces such as lecture theatres, classrooms, and studios or laboratories tailored to meet the needs of specific study disciplines. Contemporary audio-visual equipment is standard in most teaching venues, and students have access to computer labs for individual study purposes.

Advanced Standing

Advanced standing, resulting in a reduction in the number of units required to be completed for the course, may be granted if you have successfully completed study that is equivalent in content, standard, duration and recency, to units offered in the course.

Advanced standing may be offered for up to 50% of the program in which you are admitted.

4.1 Admission to Candidature

As an alternative to Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a of the University’s Rules Relating to Awards, applicants for admission to candidature in the Master of Business Administration may be selected where one or more of the following has been satisfied:
1. have completed the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration; or
2. have completed the Graduate Diploma in International Sport Management; or
3. can demonstrate academic or professional standing considered by the College Board to be equivalent to the requirements of Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a or Rule 4.1(a)(i) or Rule 4.1(a)(ii).
As an alternative to Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a of the University’s Rules Relating to Awards, applicants for admission to candidature in the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration may be selected where one or more of the following has been satisfied:
1. have completed the Graduate Certificate in Business Administration; or
2. have completed the Graduate Certificate in International Sport Management; or
3. can demonstrate academic or professional standing considered by the College Board to be equivalent to the requirements of Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a or Rule 4.1(b)(i) or Rule 4.1(b)(ii).
As an alternative to Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a of the University’s Rules Relating to Awards, applicants for admission to candidature in the Graduate Certificate in Business Administration may be admitted if they can demonstrate academic or professional standing considered by the College Board to be equivalent to the requirements of Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a.
Applicants for admission to candidature in the Master of Business Administration, Graduate Diploma in Business Administration or Graduate Certificate in Business Administration must provide evidence of at least one year’s experience in a field of employment acceptable to the College Board, except that applicants with excellent academic records may be exempted from this requirement.

4.2 Requirements for an Award

To be eligible for the Master of Business Administration (Advanced) a candidate shall successfully complete all the requirements for the Master of Business Administration plus four (4) units from Part B of the Schedule attached to these Rules.
To be eligible for the Master of Business Administration a candidate shall successfully complete twelve (12) units comprising:
1. all units listed in Part A of the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules;
2. six (6) units, from Part B of the Schedule.
To be eligible for the award of Graduate Diploma in Business Administration a candidate shall successfully complete not less than eight (8) units selected from the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules.
To be eligible for the award of Graduate Certificate in Business Administration a candidate shall successfully complete not less than four (4) units selected from the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules.
A candidate who while enrolled for the Master of Business Administration has completed the requirements of the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration or the Graduate Certificate in Business Administration may elect to be awarded the Graduate Diploma or the Graduate Certificate following withdrawal from candidature for the Masters award.
A candidate who while enrolled for the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration has completed the requirements of the Graduate Certificate in Business Administration may elect to be awarded the Graduate Certificate following withdrawal from candidature for the Graduate Diploma award.

4.3 Advanced Standing

Candidates may be granted advanced standing in accordance with Rule 2 Section 4 of the University’s Rules Relating to Awards.
Notwithstanding Rule 4.3(a), candidates for the Master of Business Administration (Advanced) who have successfully completed all the requirements for the Master of Business Administration, Master of Management, Master of International Business or equivalent masters degree may be granted advanced standing for up to twelve (12) units.
Notwithstanding Rule 4.3(a), candidates for the Master of Business Administration who have completed all the requirements for the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration, Graduate Diploma in Professional Management, Graduate Diploma in Management, Graduate Diploma in International Business, Graduate Diploma in Technology and Management, Graduate Diploma in Human Resources and Organisational Development, Graduate Diploma in Professional Accounting, Graduate Diploma in Supply Chain Management, Graduate Diploma in International Sport Management, may be granted advanced standing for up to eight (8) units.
Notwithstanding Rule 4.3(a), candidates for the Master of Business Administration or the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration, who have completed all the requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Professional Management, Graduate Certificate in Management, Graduate Certificate in Technology and Management, Graduate Certificate in Human Resources and Organisational Development, Graduate Certificate in Professional Accounting, Graduate Certificate in Supply Chain Management, Graduate Certificate in International Sport Management, may be granted advanced standing for up to four (4) units.
Notwithstanding Rule 4.3(a), candidates for the Master of Business Administration, the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration or the Graduate Certificate in Business Administration who have completed units through the Executive Management Program shall be granted advanced standing for these units.
At the discretion of the Director of the College, candidates for the Master of Business Administration, the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration or the Graduate Certificate in Business Administration may be granted advanced standing from the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules, on the basis of professional qualifications obtained through study and formal assessment provided that in all cases the work completed is considered to be equal in standard to a unit or units in this program.
Work experience will not be accepted as a basis for advanced standing. Candidates who are of the opinion that their level of knowledge is equal to that required to successfully complete a unit listed in the Schedule may apply for permission to undertake a challenge examination in that unit. Advanced standing will be granted for a unit if a result of 60 per cent or greater is achieved in the challenge examination. Advanced standing for up to three (3) units may be granted under this Rule.
