About this Course

The Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management (Advanced) (15 units) and the Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management (12 units) are designed for students with or without industry experience who wish to gain a higher degree in the field of tourism and hospitality studies.

The degree is flexible with students able to choose a course of study that matches their prospective career path. Two schedules are available: a coursework schedule consisting of hotel and tourism units that enables students to study specialist fields including tourism management, convention and event management and an optional workplace internship; plus a research schedule consisting of tourism specialisation units, research methods units and a two-trimester research project. This research schedule is designed to articulate directly into PhD study and/or provide intense research in a student’s area of interest.

Graduates may move into areas such as professional management in resorts, hotels, government tourism bodies, airlines, attractions and other special interest tourism operations.

Professional Recognition

The School of Tourism and Hospitality Management is a founding member of The International Centre of Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Education (THE-ICE). This course is accredited to meet THE-ICE standards of excellence.

Professional Placement

As part of this Masters degree, coursework students may choose to do a trimester-long internship in either a paid or volunteer role. This practical experience, combined with theoretical understanding, enhances the learning experience for students who have a professional and personal interest in this high growth area.

Students are responsible for securing their internship placement and are given extensive assistance in interview and application procedures, access to an extensive database of potential employers and roles and ongoing support from the dedicated work integrated learning team.

The coursework schedule provides a comprehensive study of all aspects of tourism and hotel management from both theoretical and practical ‘real world’ perspectives taught by academics with industry backgrounds.

To qualify for the Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management (Advanced) a total of 15 units must be completed.

To qualify for the Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management a total of 12 units must be completed.

This course offers intermediate awards (early exit points) at Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma levels.

Teaching Methods

Classes for most units are conducted once weekly, Monday to Friday, and are normally of 3 hours duration. Generally, a lecture format is the usual teaching method.

The distance education study option is highly interactive and strives to promote collaboration and a sense of community. Students receive electronic study materials and will be invited to participate in online workshops, online discussion forums and virtual classes. The method of teaching may vary from unit to unit.

Learning Resources

MySCU is a student’s point of entry to a range of online services and resources that support study and student life. The portal includes unit learning sites and information sites where students can access resources, communication tools and useful links that are integral to their studies.

The web-based program Blackboard Collaborate delivers advanced on-line learning environments for students and lecturers to communicate and collaborate through virtual meeting spaces and classrooms. They can share files, presentations, and applications. If the session is recorded, students can view it afterwards.

Learning materials include the provision of unit information guides, study guides and books of readings. Students will be provided a prescribed text book for each unit, where applicable.

The SCU library provides a wide range of services including librarian assistance, print and electronic resources, a document delivery service, catalogues, databases, ebooks, ereadings, and full-text journal literature.

The Academic Skills Development team supports student learning by offering online and on-campus academic skills workshops, email, phone, and one-on-one support.

Assessment Methods

Generally, assessment tasks are assignment-based (essays, reports, case studies) and may include oral presentations. Students will be required to sit end-of-trimester examinations in the majority of units.

Equipment and Facilities

Postgraduate tourism students have access to contemporary facilities such as modern lecture theatres and seminar rooms; computing and online facilities including online full-text business journal databases; and a common room. Students can access campus facilities between 6 am and midnight, seven days a week.

Advanced Standing may be granted to a student who has successfully completed postgraduate tertiary studies in tourism, business management or related fields of study within the last ten years at this university or at another approved institution or university. Applications for advanced standing are not accepted on the basis of current and professional industry experience.

We recommend that you apply for advance standing at the same time as you apply for admission into this course, because the amount and type of credit awarded will determine your study plan.

4.1 Qualification for Admission
  1. As an alternative to Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a of the University’s Rules Relating to Awards, applicants for admission to candidature in the Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management (Advanced) may be selected where they can demonstrate academic or professional standing considered by the School Board to be equivalent to the requirements of Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a.
  2. As an alternative to Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a of the University’s Rules Relating to Awards, applicants for admission to candidature in the Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management may be selected where one or more of the following has been satisfied:
    1. have completed the Graduate Diploma in International Tourism and Hotel Management; or
    2. can demonstrate academic or professional standing considered by the School Board to be equivalent to the requirements of Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a or 4.1(b)(i).
  3. As an alternative to Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a of the University’s Rules Relating to Awards, applicants for admission to candidature in the Graduate Diploma in International Tourism and Hotel Management may be selected where one or more of the following has been satisfied:
    1. have completed the Graduate Certificate in International Tourism and Hotel Management; or
    2. can demonstrate academic or professional standing considered by the School Board to be equivalent to the requirements of either Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a or Rule 4.1(c)(i).
  4. As an alternative to Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a of the University’s Rules Relating to Awards, applicants for admission to candidature in the Graduate Certificate in International Tourism and Hotel Management may be selected where they can demonstrate academic or professional standing considered by the School Board to be equivalent to the requirements of Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a of the University’s Rules Relating to Awards.
4.2 Requirements for an Award
  1. To be eligible for the award of the Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management (Advanced), a candidate shall successfully complete the equivalent of fifteen (15) units from the Schedule of Units attached.
  2. To be eligible for the award of Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management a candidate shall successfully complete either:
    1. The equivalent of twelve (12) units from Part A of the Schedule of Units attached;
      OR
    2. Four units from Part A and all units in Part B of the Schedule of Units attached.
  3. To be eligible for the award of Graduate Diploma in International Tourism and Hotel Management a candidate shall successfully complete eight (8) units from Part A of the Schedule of Units attached.
  4. To be eligible for the award of Graduate Certificate in International Tourism and Hotel Management a candidate shall successfully complete four (4) units from Part A of the Schedule of Units attached.
  5. A candidate who while enrolled as a candidate for the Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management (Advanced) has completed the requirements for the Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management may elect to be awarded the Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management following withdrawal from candidature for the Masters (Advanced) degree.
  6. A candidate who while enrolled as a candidate for either the Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management (Advanced) or the Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management has completed the requirements for the Graduate Diploma in International Tourism and Hotel Management may elect to be awarded the Graduate Diploma in International Tourism and Hotel Management following withdrawal from candidature for the Masters (Advanced) or Masters degree.
  7. A candidate who while enrolled as a candidate for either the Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management (Advanced) or the Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management or the Graduate Diploma in International Tourism and Hotel Management has completed the requirements for the Graduate Certificate in International Tourism and Hotel Management may elect to be awarded the Graduate Certificate in International Tourism and Hotel Management following withdrawal from candidature for the Masters (Advanced), Masters or Graduate Diploma degree.
4.3 Advanced Standing
  1. Candidates may be granted advanced standing in accordance with Rule 2 Section 4 of the University’s Rules Relating to Awards.
  2. Notwithstanding Rule 4.3(a), a candidate for the Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management (Advanced) or Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management who has completed all the requirements for the Graduate Diploma in International Tourism and Hotel Management may be granted advanced standing for up to eight (8) units.
  3. Notwithstanding Rule 4.3(a), a candidate for the Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management (Advanced) or Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management or Graduate Diploma in International Tourism and Hotel Management who has completed all the requirements for the Graduate Certificate in International Tourism and Hotel Management may be granted advanced standing for up to four (4) units.
  4. Work experience will not be accepted as a basis for advanced standing. Candidates who are of the opinion that their level of knowledge is already equal to that required to successfully complete a unit listed in the Schedule may apply to the Board of Studies to be permitted to undertake a challenge examination in that unit. Advanced standing will be granted for a unit if a result of 60% or greater is achieved in a challenge examination. A challenge examination for a unit cannot be undertaken again if the candidate is unsuccessful at the first attempt. Advanced standing for up to four (4) units may be granted under this Rule.
  5. Notwithstanding the above, candidates will not be granted advanced standing for MNG03236 - Tourism and Hotel Professional Development, MNG03237 - Tourism and Hotel Internship or MNG03400 - Tourism Research Proposal.
