The Master of Professional Accounting (MPA) is designed for non-accounting business professionals seeking a career change and planning to move into the fields of accounting, taxation, economics, law and management. The course is designed to enhance students’ ability to manage complex accounting and business issues. For those already working in the accounting and finance industry, the MPA can formalise their skills.

To qualify for the MPA a total of 16 units must be completed, however there is an opportunity for advanced standing to be granted.

There are three trimesters each year. Full-time students normally study four units per trimester to complete the course within one-and-a-half years. Part-time students usually undertake one to two units per trimester completing the course in three years or more. Each unit is designed to take up to 150 learning hours (10 to 12 hours per week) to complete over a trimester.

Teaching Methods

Study by distance education
The distance education study option is highly interactive and strives to promote collaboration and a sense of community. In addition to texts, readings and study guides, students have access library services, receive a combination of podcast or video-linked lectures, electronic study materials, and will be invited to participate in online workshops, online discussion forums and virtual classes. The method of teaching may vary from unit to unit.

Study on campus
Postgraduate courses offered on-campus at Tweed Heads are designed to maximise learning opportunities and ensure students receive individual attention from their lecturers. Classes are run weekly and are normally of three hours duration. On-campus students have unlimited internet and email access and can connect to the University’s Library catalogues, online full-text journal databases and online book and article request service.

Learning Resources

In addition to the support of experienced academic staff and student support personnel we provide students with high quality study materials including unit information documents, study guides, books of readings and textbooks. Students also have access to:

MySCU is a student’s point of entry to a range of online services and resources that support study and student life. The portal includes unit learning sites and information sites where students can access resources, communication tools and useful links that are integral to their studies.

The web-based program Blackboard Collaborate delivers advanced on-line learning environments for students and lecturers to communicate and collaborate through virtual meeting spaces and classrooms. They can share files, presentations, and applications. If the session is recorded, students can view it afterwards.

The SCU Library provides a wide range of services including librarian assistance, print and electronic resources, a document delivery service, catalogues, databases, ebooks, ereadings, and full-text journal literature.

The Academic Skills Development team supports student learning by offering online and on-campus academic skills workshops; email, phone, and one-on-one support.

Assessment Methods

The course incorporates progressive assessment and examinations. Students are assessed in each unit on the basis of written and oral assignments. These may be business reports, case studies, presentations, research studies and /or plans. Full details of assignments are contained in the study guide for each unit.

Equipment and Facilities

Southern Cross University provides students with modern well-equipped teaching spaces such as lecture theatres, classrooms, and studios or laboratories tailored to meet the needs of specific study disciplines. Contemporary audio-visual equipment is standard in most teaching venues, and students have access to computer labs for individual study purposes.

Advanced Standing

Advanced standing, resulting in a reduction in the number of units required to be completed for the course, may be granted if you have successfully completed units that are equivalent in content, standard, duration and recency, to units offered in the course.

Advanced standing may be offered for up to 50% of the program in which you are admitted.

4.1 Qualifications for Admission
  1. In accordance with University Rule 2 Section 3 – Eligibility for Admission to a Postgraduate Award Course, applicants may apply for admission to candidature in the Master of Professional Accounting, Graduate Diploma in Accounting or Graduate Certificate in Accounting.
  2. As an alternative to Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a of the University’s Rules Relating to Awards, applicants for admission to candidature in the Master of Professional Accounting, Graduate Diploma in Accounting and Graduate Certificate in Accounting may be selected where they can demonstrate academic or professional standing considered by the School Board to be equivalent to the requirements of Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a.
  3. Applicants for admission to candidature in the Master of Professional Accounting, Graduate Diploma in Accounting and Graduate Certificate in Accounting who having not fulfilled the requirements for admission to a degree or qualification of equivalent standing must provide evidence of at least three year’s experience in a field of employment acceptable to the Head of School.
4.2 Requirements for an Award
  1. To be eligible for the award of Master of Professional Accounting a candidate shall successfully complete not less than sixteen (16) units comprising:
    1. all units listed in Part A of the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules; and
    2. not less than four (4) units from Part B of the Schedule.
  2. To be eligible for the award of Graduate Diploma in Accounting a candidate shall successfully complete not less than eight (8) units comprising:
    1. ACC00712 - Business Accounting, ACC00714 - Managerial Accounting and ACC00718 - Accounting Information Systems from Part A of the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules; and
    2. Not less than five (5) units from Part A or Part B of the Schedule.
  3. To be eligible for the award of Graduate Certificate in Accounting a candidate shall successfully complete not less than four (4) units comprising:
    1. ACC00712 - Business Accounting from Part A of the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules; and
    2. Not less than three (3) units from Part A or Part B of the Schedule.
  4. A candidate in the Master of Professional Accounting who has completed the requirements for the Graduate Diploma in Accounting or Graduate Certificate in Accounting may elect to be awarded the Graduate Diploma in Accounting or Graduate Certificate in Accounting following withdrawal from candidature for the Masters degree.
  5. A candidate in the Graduate Diploma in Accounting who has completed the requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Accounting may elect to be awarded the Graduate Certificate in Accounting following withdrawal from candidature for the Graduate Diploma.
4.3 Advanced Standing
  1. Candidates may be granted advanced standing in accordance with Rule 2 Section 4 of the University’s Rules Relating to Awards.
  2. Notwithstanding Rule 4.3(a), candidates for the Master of Professional Accounting who have completed all the requirements for a bachelor’s degree from this or another university, may be granted advanced standing of up to eight (8) units, subject to Course Coordinator approval.
  3. Candidates who have completed the requirements of the Graduate Certificate in Accounting may be granted advanced standing for up to four (4) units in either the Graduate Diploma in Accounting or Master of Professional Accounting programs.
  4. Candidates who have completed the requirements of the Graduate Diploma in Accounting may be granted advanced standing for up to eight (8) units in the Master of Professional Accounting program.
