About this Course

The Master of Business Administration in Hotel and Tourism Management (MBA-HTM) is designed to provide high-level management education and industry specific studies to those already working in the field of tourism and hospitality management.

Major Areas of Study

The MBA-HTM is built around a core of generic MBA units that focus on the management of major business functions and business strategies. Elective units include studies in international tourism systems, destination marketing, tourism planning, plus a range of management topics such as event, employee, environmental and service management.

To qualify for the Master of Business Administration in Hotel and Tourism Management a total of 12 units must be completed. This must include 6 core units and 6 elective units.

There are three trimesters each year. Full-time students normally undertake 4 units per trimester to complete the course in one year. Part-time students usually undertake 2 units per trimester completing the course in 2 years. However, the program is sufficiently flexible to allow students to undertake a reduced and varied study workload.

This Masters program also has early exit points that recognise specific levels of achievement. Subject to the completion of units in accordance with the rules, you may exit with a Graduate Diploma (usually 8 units) or a Graduate Certificate (usually 4 units).

Teaching Methods

Classes for most units are conducted once weekly, Monday to Friday, and are normally of 3 hours duration. Generally, a lecture format is the usual teaching method.

The distance education study option is highly interactive and strives to promote collaboration and a sense of community. Students receive electronic study materials and will be invited to participate in online workshops, online discussion forums and virtual classes. The method of teaching may vary from unit to unit.

Learning Resources

MySCU is a student’s point of entry to a range of online services and resources that support study and student life. The portal includes unit learning sites and information sites where students can access resources, communication tools and useful links that are integral to their studies.

The web-based program Blackboard Collaborate delivers advanced on-line learning environments for students and lecturers to communicate and collaborate through virtual meeting spaces and classrooms. They can share files, presentations, and applications. If the session is recorded, students can view it afterwards.

Learning materials include the provision of unit information guides, study guides and books of readings. Students will be provided a prescribed text book for each unit, where applicable.

The SCU library provides a wide range of services including librarian assistance, print and electronic resources, a document delivery service, catalogues, databases, ebooks, ereadings, and full-text journal literature.

The Academic Skills Development team supports student learning by offering online and on-campus academic skills workshops, email, phone, and one-on-one support.

Assessment Methods

Generally, assessment tasks are assignment-based (essays, reports, case studies). As well, students may be required to make oral presentations. Students will be required to sit end-of-trimester examinations in the majority of units.

Equipment and Facilities

Postgraduate tourism students have access to contemporary facilities such as modern lecture theatres and seminar rooms; computing and online facilities including online full-text business journal databases; and a common room. Students can access campus facilities between 6am and midnight, seven days a week.

Advanced Standing may be granted to a student who has successfully completed postgraduate tertiary studies in tourism, business management or related fields of study within the last ten years at this university or at another approved institution or university. Applications for advanced standing are not accepted on the basis of current and professional industry experience.

We recommend that you apply for advance standing at the same time as you apply for admission into this course, because the amount and type of credit awarded will determine your study plan.

4.1 Admission to Candidature

As an alternative to Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a of the University’s Rules Relating to Awards, applicants for admission to candidature may be selected where one or more of the following has been satisfied:

  1. provide evidence of at least one year’s experience in a field of employment acceptable to the Divisional Postgraduate Board of Studies; and
  2. have demonstrated academic or professional standing considered by the Head of School to be equivalent to the requirement in Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a.
4.2 Requirements for an Award
  1. To be eligible for the award of Master of Business Administration in Hotel and Tourism Management a candidate shall successfully complete not less than twelve (12) units comprising:
    1. all units listed in Part A of the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules; and
    2. six (6) elective units from Part B of the Schedule.
  2. To be eligible for the award of Graduate Diploma of Business Administration in Hotel and Tourism Management a candidate shall successfully complete not less than eight (8) units comprising:
    1. four (4) units from Part A of the Schedule of Units attached to these rules; and
    2. four (4) units from Part B of the Schedule of Units
  3. To be eligible for the award of Graduate Certificate in Business Administration in Hotel and Tourism Management a candidate shall successfully complete not less than four (4) units comprising:
    1. two (2) units fromPart A of the Schedule of Units attached to these rules; and
    2. two (2) units from Part B of the Schedule of Units
  4. A candidate who while enrolled in the Master’s degree has completed the requirements for the Graduate Diploma may elect to be awarded the Graduate Diploma of Business Administration in Hotel and Tourism Management following withdrawal from candidature for the Master’s degree.
  5. A candidate who while enrolled in the Master's degree or Graduate Diploma has completed the requirements for the Graduate Certificate may elect to be awarded the Graduate Certificate in Business Administration in Hotel and Tourism Management following withdrawal from candidature for the Master’s degree or Graduate Diploma.
4.3 Advanced Standing
  1. Candidates may be granted advanced standing in accordance with Rule 2.4 of the University's Rules Relating to Awards
  2. Notwithstanding Rule 4.3(a), candidates for the Master of Business Administration in Hotel and Tourism Management who have completed all the requirements for the Graduate Diploma of Business Administration in Hotel and Tourism Management may be granted advanced standing for up to eight (8) units.
  3. Notwithstanding Rule 4.3(a), candidated for the Master of Business Administration in Hotel and Tourism Management or the Graduate Diploma of Business Administration in Hotel and Tourism Management who have completed all the requirements for the Graduate Certificate of Business Administration in Hotel and Tourism Management may be granted advanced standing for up to four (4) units.
  4. Work experience will not be accepted as a basis for advanced standing. Candidates who are of the opinion that their level of knowledge is already equal to that required to successfully complete a unit listed in the Schedule may apply to the Board of Studies to be permitted to undertake a challenge examination in that unit. Advanced standing will be granted for a unit if a result of sixty per cent (60%) or greater is achieved in a challenge examination. A challenge examination for a unit cannot be undertaken again if the candidate is unsuccessful at the first attempt.
