About this Course

The Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice is a qualification offered by the University’s Teaching and Learning Centre and is designed to suit academics in a higher education context (or equivalent). The course aims to deliver practical benefits that are relevant to academic practice by equipping academics with the requisite pedagogic knowledge, skills and perspectives. Candidates engage in using a range of educational technologies to facilitate learning across a variety of contexts.

The course also enhances opportunities to plan and develop research careers, and to engage with the pedagogy of research supervision. Elective units allow students to choose between a focus on teaching, research, and community engagement. The course fosters independent learning and participants are encouraged to negotiate authentic projects to meet their own interests, learning needs and the needs of their teaching area.

Career Opportunities

This degree offers academics in a higher education (or equivalent) context the opportunity to gain a postgraduate qualification in support of their academic practice.

Professional Placement

The first unit requires participants to be concurrently teaching at tertiary level or be employed in the facilitation of learning.

Major Areas of Study

The course contains both core and elective units, each about 150 hours of work, including the assessment tasks.

To qualify for the Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice a total of 48 credit points (usually 4 units) must be completed.

Teaching Methods

Available by distance education. Independent study needs to be undertaken via online mechanisms.

Learning Resources

MySCU is a student’s point of entry to a range of online services and resources that support study and student life. The portal includes unit learning sites and information sites where students can access resources, communication tools and useful links that are integral to their studies.

The Elluminate Live web-based audio-conferencing software may be use in some units of study. Students can have online real-time discussions with their lecturers and class while viewing PowerPoint presentations, websites, a virtual whiteboard or other shared applications — all of which are interactive. If the session is recorded, students can view it afterwards.

Learning Materials include Unit Information Guides, Study Guides and Readings. Students may need to purchase or access prescribed text books.

The SCU Library provides a wide range of services, print and electronic resources including librarian assistance, a document delivery service, catalogues, databases, eBooks, eReadings, full-text journal literature, and podcasts.

Assessment Methods

Assessment varies from unit to unit and can include: negotiated projects, contribution to discussion forums, presentation online (using Elluminate), and written assignments.

Equipment and Facilities

General campus resources are available including access to computer laboratories for individual study purposes.

How to Apply

Admission requirements are a Bachelor's degree and some form of teaching in higher education concurrent with taking the course. To enable practical application of learning, the course is taken part time while working as a teacher in higher education.

4.1 Qualification for Admission

An applicant for admission must:

  1. fulfil all the requirements for admission to a degree (or qualification of equivalent standing) at this University or at another university or tertiary institution approved by the Academic Board; and
  2. be currently employed as an academic teacher in a higher education institution (or equivalent) context (full-time, part-time or sessionally).
4.2 Requirements for an Award

To be eligible for the award of Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice a candidate shall successfully complete not less than four (4) units comprising all units listed in Part A and two (2) units from Part B of the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules.

4.3 Advanced Standing
  1. Candidates may be granted Advanced Standing in accordance with Rule 2 Section 4 of the University’s Rules Relating to Awards, with the exclusion of Rule 2 Section 4 Clause (24).
  2. Candidates may be granted Advanced Standing on the basis of recognition of prior learning (RPL) on an individual basis, where they can demonstrate academic or professional standing or a level of knowledge considered by the School Board to be equal to that required to successfully complete a unit listed in the Schedule.
  3. Work experience alone will not be accepted as a basis for Advanced Standing.
