Teaching Methods

Innovative online technologies are used to facilitate enhanced interaction and content delivery. Units are delivered online and most include regular online interaction and guest presentations by national and international experts in the field. This provides opportunities for students to discuss content and issues as a group and with their tutor.

Learning Resources

MySCU is a student’s point of entry to a range of online services and resources that support study and student life. The portal includes unit learning sites and information sites where students can access resources, communication tools and useful links that are integral to their studies.

The Elluminate Live web-based audio-conferencing software may be use in some units of study. Students can have online real-time discussions with their lecturers and class while viewing PowerPoint presentations, websites, a virtual whiteboard or other shared applications — all of which are interactive. If the session is recorded, students can view it afterwards.

Learning Materialsinclude Unit Information Guides, Study Guides and Readings. Students may need to purchase or access prescribed text books.

The SCU Library provides a wide range of services, print and electronic resources including librarian assistance, a document delivery service, catalogues, databases, eBooks, eReadings, full-text journal literature, and podcasts.

Assessment Methods

Assessment tasks vary for each unit and may comprise a mix of assessment types, including critical literature reviews, reflective journals, case-study reports, small research project work and formal practical work. The MEd units increasingly use innovative on-line interaction, seminars and group-work so that students can see how they are progressing and be given guidance if they require it. There are generally no written examinations.

Advanced standing may be granted to a student for tertiary studies successfully completed within the last ten years at this university or at another approved post secondary institution including TAFE, private providers or other universities.

4.1 Admission to Candidature

Applicants for admission to candidature shall hold at least the equivalent of a three-year degree.

4.2 Requirements for an Award

To be eligible for the award of Master of Education a candidate shall successfully complete the equivalent of sixteen (16) units comprising:

all units listed in Part A of the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules; and
fourteen (14) units selected from Part B of the Schedule.
Notwithstanding Rule 4.2(b), the Course Coordinator may approve the substitution of up to two (2) postgraduate coursework units from elsewhere in the University’s offerings for those in Part B of the Schedule.

4.3 Advanced Standing

Candidates may be granted advanced standing in accordance with Rule 2 Section 4 of the University's Rules Relating to Awards.
Notwithstanding Rule 4.3(a), candidates for the Master of Education who have completed all the requirements for a four-year degree in teaching may be granted advanced standing for up to eight (8) units.
