The aim of the Master of Environmental Science and Management is to provide postgraduate coursework training for professional environmental scientists and managers, especially those without previous higher education qualifications in environmental management. The course will benefit professional people who have entered the profession as graduates with science or other related degrees and who wish to develop specialist knowledge and skills. Environmental issues are a key concern for governments, industry and communities and a postgraduate qualification in environmental science opens up a wealth of emerging career opportunities.

To qualify for the Master of Environmental Science and Management a total 12 units (144 credit points) must be completed.

On-campus students are usually required to attend lectures (two hours) and tutorials/ practicals (two-three hours) each week. Some units are delivered in intensive mode, which comprises of one week preparation, one week face-to-face and two weeks to complete assessments.
Technical support is provided to students in the specialist laboratories and for the use of field equipment.
Residential workshops: Students studying by distance education will need to attend residential sessions in Lismore for most units of study.
In addition to the support of experienced academic staff and student support personnel we provide students with high quality study materials including unit information documents, study guides, books of readings and textbooks. Students also have access to:
MySCU is a student’s point of entry to a range of online services and resources that support study and student life. The portal includes unit learning sites and information sites where students can access resources, communication tools and useful links that are integral to their studies.
The web-based program Blackboard Collaborate delivers advanced on-line learning environments for students and lecturers to communicate and collaborate through virtual meeting spaces and classrooms. They can share files, presentations, and applications. If the session is recorded, students can view it afterwards.
The SCU Library provides a wide range of services including librarian assistance, print and electronic resources, a document delivery service, catalogues, databases, ebooks, ereadings, and full-text journal literature.
The Academic Skills Development Unit supports student learning by offering online and on-campus academic skills workshops; email, phone, and one-on-one support.
Assessment varies for each unit and generally comprises a mix of assessment types, including laboratory and readings-based assignments, seminar presentations, field and investigation reports, and formal practical and written examinations. Research units require students to complete a short thesis.
Facilities include fully equipped scientific (biology, molecular biology, chemistry, geography, geographic information systems and remote sensing, fisheries, palaeoecology, geology, soil science, forestry and geochemistry) laboratories. Students have access to a large collection of general sampling and field equipment, including several boats and 4WD vehicles, fish and animal sampling equipment, sediment samplers, diving equipment and an underwater video recorder, geotechnical and geochemical data collection equipment, and a portable weather station and data logger. The laboratories are fully equipped with advanced analytical equipment, especially for geochemistry, microscopy and genetic analysis; they also include full computing, geographic information system and remotely sensed data analysis facilities.
