Unit Description

Examines the rules of international individual criminal responsibility in the context of the most heinous crimes of the modern era. These include the main international crimes committed during the Nazi regime, the Apartheid era in South Africa, the KhmerRouge regime in Cambodia, the wars in former Yugoslavia during the 1990s, and the practices of the military rulers in Burma. The extent, consistency, adequacy and variety of the international community’s response, in respect to both the perpetrators andthe victims of these crimes, will be critically analysed. The issues concerning the creation of a permanent International Criminal Court will also be explored.
