About this Course

The Master of Human Resources and Organisational Development (MHROD) is designed to provide specialist knowledge in the areas of strategic human resource management and development, organisational development and change, industrial relations, leadership and people management, organisational behaviour, and international human resource management. The course builds on current experience and skills to assist candidates with managing complex issues that arise in human resources and organisational development.

Professional Recognition

The Master, Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate are all accredited by the Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI).

Major Areas of Study

Students will study six core units and six electives. The electives include HR specific and general management study areas. Students also have the option of conducting a work related research project.

To qualify for the Master of Human Resources and Organisational Development a total of 12 units must be completed. There are three trimesters each year. Full-time students normally study four units per trimester to complete the course in one year. Part time students usually study one to two units per trimester completing the course in two years or more. Each unit is designed to take up to 150 learning hours (10 to 12 hours per week) to complete over a trimester.

Teaching Methods

The distance education study option is highly interactive and strives to promote collaboration and a sense of community. In addition to texts, readings and study guides, students have access library services, receive a combination of podcast or video-linked lectures, electronic study materials, and will be invited to participate in online workshops, online discussion forums and virtual classes. The method of teaching may vary from unit to unit.

Learning Resources

In addition to the support of experienced academic staff and student support personnel we provide students with high quality study materials including unit information documents, study guides, books of readings and textbooks. Students also have access to:

MySCU is a student’s point of entry to a range of online services and resources that support study and student life. The portal includes unit learning sites and information sites where students can access resources, communication tools and useful links that are integral to their studies.

The web-based program Blackboard Collaborate delivers advanced on-line learning environments for students and lecturers to communicate and collaborate through virtual meeting spaces and classrooms. They can share files, presentations, and applications. If the session is recorded, students can view it afterwards.

The SCU Library provides a wide range of services including librarian assistance, print and electronic resources, a document delivery service, catalogues, databases, ebooks, ereadings, and full-text journal literature.

The Academic Skills Development Unit supports student learning by offering online and on-campus academic skills workshops; email, phone, and one-on-one support.

Assessment Methods

The course incorporates progressive assessment and examinations. Students are assessed in each unit on the basis of written and oral assignments. These may be business reports, case studies, presentations, research studies and /or plans. Full details of assignments are contained in the study guide for each unit.

4.1 Admission to Candidature
  1. As an alternative to Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a of the University’s Rules Relating to Awards, applicants for admission to candidature in the Master of Human Resources and Organisational Development may be selected where one or more of the following has been satisfied:
    1. have completed the Graduate Diploma of Human Resources and Organisational Development; or
    2. can demonstrate academic or professional standing considered by the School Board to be equivalent to the requirements of Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a or 4.1(a)(i).
  2. As an alternative to Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a of the University’s Rules Relating to Awards, applicants for admission to candidature in the Graduate Diploma of Human Resources and Organisational Development may be selected where one or more of the following has been satisfied:
    1. have completed the Graduate Certificate of Human Resources and Organisational Development; or
    2. can demonstrate academic or professional standing considered by the School Board to be equivalent to the requirements of either Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a or Rule 4.1(b)(i).
  3. As an alternative to Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a of the University’s Rules Relating to Awards, applicants for admission to candidature in the Graduate Certificate of Human Resources and Organisational Development may be selected where they can demonstrate academic or professional standing considered by the School Board to be equivalent to the requirements of Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a of the University’s Rules Relating to Awards.
  4. Applicants for admission to candidature in the Master of Human Resources and Organisational Development, Graduate Diploma of Human Resources and Organisational Development or Graduate Certificate of Human Resources and Organisational Development must provide evidence of at least one year’s experience in a field of employment acceptable to the School Board.
4.2 Requirements for an Award
  1. To be eligible for the award of Master of Human Resources and Organisational Development a candidate shall successfully complete not less than twelve (12) units comprising:
    1. all six (6) units from Part A of the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules;
    2. six (6) units from Part B of the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules.
  2. To be eligible for the award of Graduate Diploma of Human Resources and Organisational Development a candidate shall successfully complete not less than eight (8) units comprising:
    1. six (6) units selected from Part A of the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules; and
    2. two (2) units from Part B of the Schedule.
  3. To be eligible for the award of Graduate Certificate of Human Resources and Organisational Development a candidate shall successfully complete the following (4) units from Part A of the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules:
    MNG00704 - Human Resource Development;
    MNG00724 - Human Resource Management;
    MNG00786 - International and Comparative Human Resource Management; and
    MNG03217 - Leading and Managing People.
  4. A candidate who while enrolled for the Master of Human Resources and Organisational Development has completed the requirements of the Graduate Diploma of Human Resources and Organisational Development or the Graduate Certificate of Human Resources and Organisational Development may elect to be awarded the Graduate Diploma or the Graduate Certificate following withdrawal from candidature for the Masters award.
  5. A candidate who while enrolled for the Graduate Diploma of Human Resources and Organisational Development has completed the requirements of the Graduate Certificate in Human Resources and Organisational Development may elect to be awarded the Graduate Certificate following withdrawal from candidature for the Graduate Diploma award.
4.3 Advanced Standing
  1. Candidates may be granted advanced standing in accordance with Rule 2 Section 4 of the University’s Rules Relating to Awards.
  2. Notwithstanding Rule 4.3(a), candidates for the Master of Human Resources and Organisational Development who have completed all the requirements for the Graduate Diploma of Human Resources and Organisational Development, the Graduate Diploma of Vocational Education and Training, the Graduate Diploma of Leadership and Workplace Development, or another equivalent Graduate Diploma may be granted advanced standing for up to eight (8) units.
  3. Notwithstanding Rule 4.3(a), candidates for the Master of Human Resources and Organisational Development or the Graduate Diploma of Human Resources and Organisational Development who have completed all the requirements for the Graduate Certificate of Human Resources and Organisational Development, the Graduate Certificate of Vocational Education and Training, the Graduate Certificate in Leadership and Workplace Development, or another equivalent Graduate Certificate may be granted advanced standing for up to four (4) units.
  4. At the discretion of the Director of the College, candidates for the Master of Human Resources and Organisational Development, the Graduate Diploma of Human Resources and Organisational Development or the Graduate Certificate of Human Resources and Organisational Development may be granted advanced standing from the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules, on the basis of professional qualifications obtained through study and formal assessment provided that in all cases the work completed is considered to be equal in standard to a unit or units in this program.
  5. Work experience will not be accepted as a basis for advanced standing. Candidates who are of the opinion that their level of knowledge is equal to that required to successfully complete a unit listed in the Schedule may apply for permission to undertake a challenge examination in that unit. Advanced standing will be granted for a unit if a result of sixty per cent (60%) or greater is achieved in the challenge examination. Advanced standing for up to three (3) units may be granted under this rule.
