The Masters and Graduate Diploma of Vocational Education and Training (VET) aim to provide candidates with the skills and knowledge needed to design, implement and evaluate effective, flexible and innovative teaching and learning programs. These qualifications assist graduates to shape their own teaching practice in response to their students’ needs.
Completion of the Graduate Diploma provides a pathway to the Masters degree. Graduate VET studies are a much sought-after qualification in a range of large organisations and businesses that train their own staff.
The Graduate Diploma and Master of Vocational Education and Training are recognised by both NSW TAFE and the VET sector as advanced qualifications for those who are already teachers and trainers.
The course explores the theoretical underpinnings of adult learning and the national requirements of the VET sector. It includes practical application of newly acquired knowledge and theoretical understanding, so that candidates can develop their skills.
To qualify for the Master of Vocational Education and Training a total of 144 credit points (usually 12 units) must be completed.
Most students complete the Graduate Diploma of Vocational Education and Training, a total of 96 credit points (usually 8 units) before applying to undertake the extra four units for the Master’s award.
This course offers an intermediate award (exit point) at Graduate Certificate level.

Units are delivered by distance education. Academic staff are available to provide regular consultation, providing students with the opportunity to seek study advice and resolve learning problems. Opportunities may also be available to participate in workshops online, on-campus or at other locations.
MySCU is a student’s point of entry to a range of online services and resources that support study and student life. The portal includes unit learning sites and information sites where students can access resources, communication tools and useful links that are integral to their studies.
The web-based program Blackboard Collaborate delivers advanced on-line learning environments for students and lecturers to communicate and collaborate through virtual meeting spaces and classrooms. They can share files, presentations, and applications. If the session is recorded, students can view it afterwards.
Learning materials include the provision of unit information guides, study guides and books of readings. Students may need to purchase or access prescribed text books.
The SCU library provides a wide range of services including librarian assistance, print and electronic resources, a document delivery service, catalogues, databases, ebooks, ereadings, and full-text journal literature.
The Academic Skills Development team supports student learning by offering online and on-campus academic skills workshops, email, phone, and one-on-one support.
The assessment methods used in this course vary from unit to unit. Most units utilise progressive assessment with marks typically allocated across a combination of assessment tasks due at different times during the study period. Students are advised of assessment requirements for each unit at the commencement of each study period including clear guidelines, due dates, and the weighting for each assessment task.
General campus resources are available including access to computer laboratories for individual study purposes.

Please note: The Graduate Diploma of Vocational Education and Training is a Commonwealth Supported course and full-fee paying, while the Master of Vocational Education and Training is just a full-fee paying course. Therefore, the Graduate Diploma of Vocational Education and Training will normally have a lower fee rate than the Masters award, unless all the Commonwealth Supported Places are filled. For this reason, we highly recommend students apply for the Graduate Diploma of Vocational Education and Training. On completion of the Graduate Diploma, students can then continue on with the remaining 4 full-fee paying units for the Master of Vocational Education and Training.
If you have already completed a Graduate Diploma of Vocational Education and Training at postgraduate level at another University, you should apply for the Master of Vocational Education and Training and apply for advanced standing.
Important note for sponsored students (i.e. whose employer such as TAFE is paying for your fees): You must discuss undertaking your course and sponsorship with your Teacher Support Facilitator before applying on-line for the Graduate Diploma or Master of Vocational Education and Training.
