About this Course

This course prepares professionals to develop knowledge and skills to work in senior leadership and/or scientific roles in public health, or related health fields in the Australian and international contexts. Health professionals who wish to broaden and re-orient their career potential, and increase employment options will be attracted to the diverse range of specialisations and topics being offered in this course.

Career Opportunities

This course is designed to enhance career and employment prospects. Qualified public health professionals may seek a new career specialisation in public health while qualified health professionals from other disciplines may seek to reorient their work to focus on the prevention of illness and the promotion of the health of populations. Work opportunities exist in regional, rural, remote and urban areas nationally and internationally in public health agencies and community agencies in the government and private sectors. The professional placement studies option in the Master of Public Health (Advanced) may also provide career opportunities and networks for those students, through contacts they establish during this time.

To qualify for the Master of Public Health, a total of 144 credit points (usually 12 units) must be completed.

Teaching Methods

This course is primarily delivered online using computer-assisted technologies with some units supported through campus-based teaching. Students have access to learning materials (print, online, CD and/or audiovisual) and online discussion forums. Academic staff are available by phone and email for student consultation. The research component of the course is undertaken under appropriate academic supervision and is tailored to meet the needs of individual students. Students will be required to have computer and internet access.

Learning Resources

MySCU is a student’s point of entry to a range of online services and resources that support study and student life. The portal includes unit learning sites and information sites where students can access resources, communication tools and useful links that are integral to their studies.

The web-based program Blackboard Collaborate delivers advanced on-line learning environments for students and lecturers to communicate and collaborate through virtual meeting spaces and classrooms. They can share files, presentations, and applications. If the session is recorded, students can view it afterwards.

Learning materials include the provision of unit information guides, study guides and books of readings. Students may need to purchase or access prescribed text books.

The SCU library provides a wide range of services including librarian assistance, print and electronic resources, a document delivery service, catalogues, databases, ebooks, ereadings, and full-text journal literature.

The Academic Skills Development team supports student learning by offering online and on-campus academic skills workshops, email, phone, and one-on-one support.

Assessment Methods

Assessments vary for each unit and generally comprise assignment tasks. Few units have an examination. Units are graded fail, pass, credit, distinction, high distinction. Research units are assessed by outputs and are graded as either satisfactory or unsatisfactory.

General campus resources are available including access to computer laboratories for individual study purposes.

4.1 Admission to Candidature
  1. As an alternative to Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a of the University’s Rules Relating to Awards, applicants for admission to candidature in the Master of Public Health or Master of Public Health (Advanced) may be selected where they can demonstrate academic or professional standing considered by the School Board to be equivalent to the requirements of Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a.
  2. An applicant who is not an Australian citizen and for whom English is not their first language must be able to demonstrate proof of English proficiency by obtaining an overall band score of not less than 6.5 in the International English Language Testing System (including a minimum of score of 6.0 in the sub-bands), or equivalent TOEFL or comparable test as determined by the Academic Board.
4.2 Requirements for an Award
  1. To be eligible for the Master of Public Health (Advanced) a candidate shall successfully complete the equivalent of sixteen (16) units comprising:
    1. all units listed in Part A of the Schedule;
    2. four (4) units from a named specialisation in Part B of the Schedule, plus two (2) other units from Part B; or any six (6) units from Part B of the Schedule; and,
    3. all units from Part C of the Schedule attached to these Rules.
  2. To be eligible for the Master of Public Health a candidate shall successfully complete twelve (12) units comprising:
    1. all units listed in Part A of the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules;
    2. four (4) units from a named specialisation in Part B of the Schedule, plus two (2) other units from Part B; or any six (6) units from Part B.
  3. To be eligible for the Graduate Diploma in Public Health a candidate shall successfully complete not less than four (4) units from Part A of the Schedule and four (4) units from Part B of the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules.
  4. To be eligible for the award of Graduate Certificate in Public Health a candidate shall successfully complete a total of four (4) units comprising two (2) units from Part A of the Schedule and any two (2) units from Part B of the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules.
  5. A candidate, who while enrolled in the Master of Public Health (Advanced) has satisfied the requirements for the Master of Public Health, may elect to be awarded the Master of Public Health following withdrawal from candidature of the Master of Public Health (Advanced) Award.
  6. A candidate, who while enrolled in the Master of Public Health or Master of Public Health (Advanced) has satisfied the requirements for the Graduate Diploma of Public Health, may elect to be awarded the Graduate Diploma of Public Health following withdrawal from candidature from the Master of Public Health or Master of Public Health (Advanced) award.
  7. A candidate who while enrolled in the Master of Public Health or Master of Public Health (Advanced) has satisfied the requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Public Health, may elect to graduate with this award following withdrawal from the Master of Public Health or Master of Public Health (Advanced) award.
4.3 Advanced Standing

Candidates for the Master of Public Health (Advanced) who have successfully completed all the requirements for the Master of Public Health, may be granted advanced standing for up to twelve (12) units.
