About this Course

This postgraduate course provides a pathway for health professionals seeking to develop and/or upgrade their clinical leadership and management knowledge skills. It also provides the opportunity for senior health leaders to develop best practice within clinical education and teaching contexts.

The course was planned in collaboration with, and support from the School of Health, University of New England, and key health service providers in the North Coast Area Health Service and the Hunter New England Area Health Service.

Candidates study up to 50 per cent of the award by enrolling at either the Southern Cross University or University of New England, for which cross-institutional credit will be provided.

Career Opportunities

Graduates will be equipped with management and leadership skills at senior levels within the health care system. Their career paths can range from advancement to senior management, health education, advanced clinical practice and clinical consultation. The focus of the course is the preparation of senior leaders and managers in health knowledge, skills and clinical teaching.

To qualify for the Master of Clinical Leadership (Advanced) a total of 195 credit points (usually 16 units) must be completed.

This course offers intermediate awards (exit points) at Master, Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate levels.

Teaching Methods

This course is primarily delivered on-line using computer-assisted technologies with some units supported through campus-based teaching. Students have access to learning materials (print, online, CD-ROM, A/V) and MySCU discussion forums. Units have a dedicated website on the MySCU online environment, which is accessible upon enrolment. Academic staff are available by phone and email for student consultation. The research component of the course is undertaken under appropriate academic supervision and is tailored to meet the needs of individual students.

Learning Resources

MySCU is a student’s point of entry to a range of online services and resources that support study and student life. The portal includes unit learning sites and information sites where students can access resources, communication tools and useful links that are integral to their studies.

The web-based program Blackboard Collaborate delivers advanced on-line learning environments for students and lecturers to communicate and collaborate through virtual meeting spaces and classrooms. They can share files, presentations, and applications. If the session is recorded, students can view it afterwards.

Learning materials include the provision of unit information guides, study guides and books of readings. Students may need to purchase or access prescribed text books.

The SCU library provides a wide range of services including librarian assistance, print and electronic resources, a document delivery service, catalogues, databases, ebooks, ereadings, and full-text journal literature.

The Academic Skills Development team supports student learning by offering online and on-campus academic skills workshops, email, phone, and one-on-one support.

Assessment Methods

A variety of assessment methods will be used, including in-class presentations when offered on-campus (individually and in groups), written assignments, reports and case-based scenarios, clinical skills testing and self-performance evaluation and examinations (multiple choice, short answer and essay style questions).

Equipment and Facilities

General campus resources are available including access to computer laboratories for individual study purposes. Students are expected to have computer and internet access.

Specific Award Rules

See the University’s Rules Relating to Awards, in conjunction with the Specific Award Rules listed below.

4.1 Admission to Candidature
  1. As an alternative to Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a of the University’s Rules Relating to Awards, applicants for admission to candidature in the Master of Clinical Leadership (Advanced) may be selected where they can demonstrate academic or professional standing considered by the School Board to be equivalent to the requirements of Rule 2 Section 3 Clause (20)a.
    1. Have been born in one of the countries listed in Schedule A attached to Rule 2 Section 1 Clause (7) and have completed at least one year of full time (or equivalent) study at the level of AQF diploma (or equivalent) or above and the language in which that qualification was taught was English; or
    2. An applicant must be able to demonstrate proof of English proficiency by obtaining an overall band score of not less than 6.5 in the International English Language Testing System (including a minimum score of 6.0 in the sub-bands) or equivalent TOEFL or comparable test as determined by the Academic Board.
4.2 Requirements for an Award
  1. To be eligible for the Master of Clinical Leadership (Advanced) a candidate shall successfully complete not less than sixteen (16) units comprising:
    1. All units listed in Part A of the Schedule of Units; and
    2. Four (4) units from a named specialisation in Part B of the Schedule, or any four (4) units from Part B of the Schedule; plus
    3. Four (4) units from Part C of the Schedule; and
    4. Two (2) double-weighted units from Part D of the Schedule attached to these Rules or prescribed units from the University of New England.
  2. To be eligible for the Master of Clinical Leadership a candidate shall successfully complete twelve (12) units comprising:
    1. All units listed in Part A of the Schedule of Units; and
    2. Four (4) units from a named specialisation in Part B of the Schedule, or any four (4) units from Part B of the Schedule; and
    3. Four (4) units from Part C of the Schedule attached to these Rules.
  3. A candidate, who while enrolled in the Master of Clinical Leadership (Advanced) has satisfied the requirements for the Master of Clinical Leadership, may elect to be awarded the Master of Clinical Leadership following withdrawal of candidature from the Master of Clinical Leadership (Advanced) or Master of Clinical Leadership award.
  4. A candidate, who while enrolled in the Master of Clinical Leadership (Advanced) or Master of Clinical Leadership has satisfied the requirements for the Graduate Diploma of Clinical Leadership, may elect to be awarded the Graduate Diploma of Clinical Leadership following withdrawal of candidature from the Master of Clinical Leadership (Advanced) or Master of Clinical Leadership award.
  5. A candidate, who while enrolled in the Master of Clinical Leadership (Advanced) or Master of Clinical Leadership has satisfied the requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Leadership, may elect to graduate with this award following withdrawal from the Master of Clinical Leadership (Advanced) or Master of Clinical Leadership award.
4.3 Advanced Standing
  1. Candidates who have successfully completed a professional development program offered by a State or National Government health authority may apply to have the relevant prior study assessed for advanced standing, on a case by case basis.
  2. Candidates completing cross institutional study of prescribed University of New England units by cross institutional study will be awarded advanced standing for the relevant units on demonstrated successful completion.
  3. Candidates may not be awarded overall more than 50% of advanced standing into this award including advanced standing awarded on the basis of cross institutional study with the University of New England.
