4. Choose Your Payment Option

You will check the fee category on your offer and complete a Commonwealth Assistance Form (eCAF).

Southern Cross University offers two kinds of University places; C’wealth supported and Aust fee-paying. Check the fee category on your offer to see which Commonwealth Assistance Form you will need to complete, then read the information provided in the appropriate tab below to find out whether you must fill out a Government form or not. Next, expand and read the information about the Services and Amenities fee. Most students at SCU will pay this fee and if you wish to defer this fee you will need to fill out an additional Commonwealth Assistance Form.

SA-HELP is an additional loan scheme available for eligible students in award courses to defer the Services and Amenities fee through to the Australian Tax Office.

All Commonwealth Supported students must complete a HECS-HELP Commonwealth Assistance Form (eCAF) regardless of whether you pay your HECS up front or defer them to your HECS-HELP loan. You must complete and submit your eCAF through My Enrolment before you will be allowed to enrol in any units.

  • If you are an Australian citizen (or the holder of a Permanent Humanitarian Visa) you may choose to defer your Student Contribution Amount (HECS) to your HECS-HELP loan with the Australian Taxation Office. This means that you will not have to pay your HECS until you are earning the threshold income specified by the Government. If you pay your HECS fees upfront, you will receive a discount.
  • If you are a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident of Australia you must pay your HECS fees up front and in full (no upfront payment discount applies). You are not allowed to defer your Student Contribution Amount.
  • If you have transferred from another course at SCU, you will need to complete a new Commonwealth Assistance Form (eCAF) for your new course.
  • If you choose to defer your HECS fees, you will need to provide your Tax File Number on your Commonwealth Assistance Form (eCAF).
  • Before you complete your eCAF, the Government requires that you read their publication called Information for Commonwealth Supported students. By submitting the form you are confirming that you have read this booklet. You can download the booklet at the Government’s webite: www.goingtouni.gov.au

Australian Fee Paying students may be eligible to complete a FEE-HELP Government Assistance Form (eCAF) to defer their tuition fees to the Australian Taxation Office. FEE-HELP is an Australian Government loan given to eligible fee-paying students to help pay part or all of their tuition fees.

  • If you are an Australian citizen (or the holder of a permanent Humanitarian visa) you may choose to defer your Tuition Fees to a FEE-HELP loan with the Australian Taxation Office. This means that you will not have to pay your fees until you are earning the threshold income specified by the Government.
  • If you are a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident of Australia you must pay your tuition fees upfront and in full. You are not allowed to take out a FEE-HELP loan to defer your fees.
  • If you are a postgraduate student there are no loan fees associated with the FEE-HELP scheme, but if you are a fee-paying undergraduate student, a loan fee does apply.
  • The Commonwealth Government places a FEE-HELP limit on the amount you can choose to defer.
  • If you choose to defer your tuition fees via FEE-HELP, you will need to provide your Tax File Number on your FEE-HELP form (eCAF).

If you choose to complete a FEE-HELP eCAF, the Government requires that you read their publication called “FEE-HELP Information”. By submitting the form you are confirming that you have read this booklet. You can download the booklet at the Government’s webite: www.goingtouni.gov.au

Most students at SCU will be required to pay a Services and Amenities Fee (SAAF). For more information on fee amounts, what the fees are for, and whether the fee is applicable to you, please visit the Services and Amenities Fee website.

Students liable for the SAAF may be eligible to complete a SA-HELP Government Assistance Form (eCAF) to defer the fee to the Australian Taxation Office. SA-HELP is an Australian Government loan given to eligible students to help pay part or all of their SAAF fees.

  • If you are an Australian citizen (or the holder of a permanent Humanitarian visa) you may choose to defer your Services and Amenities Fee to an SA-HELP loan with the Australian Taxation Office. This means that you will not have to pay your fees until you are earning the threshold income specified by the Government.
  • If you are a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident of Australia you must pay your Services and Amenities Fees upfront and in full. You are not allowed to take out an SA-HELP loan to defer your fees.
  • If you are in a non-award course you are ineligible for the SA-HELP loan scheme
  • If you choose to defer your SAAF via SA-HELP, you will need to provide your Tax File Number on your SA-HELP form (eCAF).

If you choose to complete a SA-HELP eCAF, the Government requires that you read their publication called “SA-HELP information”. By submitting the form you are confirming that you have read this booklet. You can download the booklet at the Government’s website: www.studyassist.gov.au

If you are enrolled internally in one or more units for a study period you are expected to sit ALL your exams at your home campus. Do not enter exam centre details.

6. Check your access to MySCU and SCU Webmail

SCU students have several different system logins:

  • My Enrolment
This is the system used in the steps above. You will access this system regularly to self-manage your studies; for example in each study period you will get your final grades here. It is your online student record. Take some time to get familiar with all the menu options.
  • MySCU
Your username and password can be found by selecting MySCU Details from within MyEnrolment. Go there now and find them. You will use MySCU almost every day.
  • SCU Webmail
A new Southern Cross University Email and Calendaring service is now available for all students. Your username and password can be found by selecting MySCU Details from within MyEnrolment. Students can access the new email system at http://email.scu.edu.au. See scu.edu.au/it/messaging for more information.

Important: When you receive an offer from SCU, your MySCU and Webmail accounts are set up overnight. If you cannot access these systems today, wait until tomorrow and then try again.

Once you have completed these tasks, you have officially been admitted to your course. Admission happens once every time you start a new course at SCU.

The next step is to enrol in Units.

Commencing study in 2012?
Enrolment for all study periods in 2012 is now open, you can continue and enrol.

Commencing study in 2013?
Enrolment for all study periods in 2013 will open in September 2012. Check your SCU Webmail account regularly for important enrolment updates — including notification of the 2013 enrolment opening date. Take a look now at the steps you will take in September to enrol in your units.

Next, you need to enrol in your units

7. Get Your Course Enrolment Guide

Your Course Enrolment Guide provides detailed information about your course structure, the units of study in which you will enrol to complete your degree and the recommended unit enrolment sequence for full time, part time and distance education students (where applicable). It will be an invaluable resource to you throughout your studies at SCU.

Commencing study in 2012?
The 2012 Course Enrolment Guides are available now.

Commencing study in 2013?
The 2013 Course Enrolment Guides are available from September 2012.

Because courses and course rules change over time, you will need the Course Enrolment Guide printed for your year of commencement.

Go to the Course Enrolment Guides download site and use the information provided in your offer to locate and download your Course Enrolment Guide then read it thoroughly, it will answer many of the questions you may have.

Open www.scu.edu.au/enrol/courseguide

8. Choose your Units

You will choose your units for the year.

Your Course Enrolment Guide will recommend the units you should choose for enrolment in each study period of the year. Read this guide carefully.

Enrolment for the following year opens in September every year. You will receive a notification advising you that enrolment is open in your SCU Webmail account. Look out for this email and enrol early.

SCU requires that you plan your studies in advance and enrol in units for the full academic year (all study periods). You will be self managing your enrolment online in My Enrolment and you can change your enrolled units, add more units or withdraw from units up until the start of each study period.

Once you have chosen your units for the year from your Course Enrolment Guide, make sure you understand where those units fit into your course structure. Course Structures may have many parts.

Hint: It is much easier to enrol in your chosen units when you know what part of the course structure they belong to. For example if you have chosen to enrol in a unit that is part of a major, then when you enrol online, you must choose the major before you can choose the unit. Use your Course Enrolment Guide to determine where the units you have chosen fit into your course structure.

Although a unit may be listed in your Course Enrolment Guide as available in a certain study period, it is always a good idea to check the University’s official Schedule of Units when planning your studies. Visit the Schedule of Units site now and get familiar with this useful tool.

Now that you have chosen your units, understand where they fit into your course structure, and checked their availability in the Schedule of Units, it’s time to enrol in them online.

9. Enrol in Units using My Enrolment

You will enrol in your units for each study period for the whole year using My Enrolment.

Open My Enrolment

  1. Within My Enrolment select My Study Plans.
The Study Plan Details: Overview page will be displayed and you will be presented with your Study Plan for that course.
  2. Choose I want to… Enrol in units from the links at the bottom of My Study Plans.
You will be presented with the Enrolment: planned units page. Follow the steps described in My Enrolment. More information about the steps can be found below.

    1. Add a Unit to your potential enrolment list

If the unit in which you want to enrol appears as a planned unit available for enrolment, select it and then select I want to… Add the selected unit to my potential enrolment list.

Otherwise you will need to use the Options/Electives grid at the bottom of the page to find your chosen unit. The Extra Detail column in this grid will help you to choose the option containing your chosen unit. Remember that you may have to choose a major or a unit grouping and add it to your study plan before you can choose any units it contains. Once you have saved your chosen unit (or group of units) to your study plan in a planned status you can select it from the units available for enrolment grid and I want to… Add the selected unit to my potential enrolment list.

    2. Choose your preferred attendance mode for the unit

External mode means that you want to study the unit by distance education; internal mode means that you want to study the unit on-campus. Note that some students do not have an option to change their attendance mode.

    3. Choose when and where you want to study the unit

A unit availability is the combination of the year, study period and location that you want to study a unit. If you have chosen external mode in the previous step, the location is described as University-wide. Remember that not all units will be available at your preferred location in the year and study period you want — check the Schedule of Units for up-to-date information about unit availabilities.

    4. Confirm your choice

A summary of your unit enrolment choice will be presented. Make sure the information is correct and then choose I want to… Enrol in all of the units in my ‘Potential Enrolment List’.

Important: SCU recommends that you enrol in one unit at a time rather than adding more units to your potential enrolment list. This will ensure you do not time-out of the system while choosing units and makes any warning messages about your unit enrolment easier to read and understand.

Your enrolment is confirmed by a green tick and a message stating that you have successfully enrolled. Remember you are not officially enrolled in the unit until you have received the green tick and the successful message.

  3. Check your enrolment and the census dates for your units
Before you leave My Study Plans, it is a good idea to check that you are officially enrolled in all of the units you intend to study. Go to Current Enrolment on the left-hand menu bar to ensure each of your units are recorded correctly. Note that each unit has a Census Date.

Important: It is your responsibility to know when the census date occurs for each of your enrolled units.

10. Access Your Unit Learning Site(s) in MySCU

A Unit Learning Site is generated for every unit in which you have an official enrolment. One week before the start of each study period, your Unit Learning Sites will open. Your lecturer will use this site to communicate important information to you about the unit and your studies. It is very important that you visit this site regularly — SCU recommends that you visit every day during the study period.

Inside your Unit Learning Site you will find your Unit Information Guide. Your Unit Information Guide will provide you with the details of your assessments, the required textbooks and reading lists and information about the activities you are expected to undertake.

If you cannot see your unit learning site(s) one week before the study period starts, firstly you should check in My Enrolment to see that you are correctly enrolled in the unit (see step 8 above for instructions about this). If your enrolment is correctly recorded, you should contact your School for more information. The contact details for your School can be found in your Course Enrolment Guide (see step 6 above).

Open MySCU (study.scu.edu.au)

Once you have completed these tasks, you will be officially enrolled in your units. Enrolment in Units happens once a year for all the study periods in the year.

Finally, you will register into your classes

If you enrol in any on-campus units (internal mode), you should attend the scheduled on-campus classes for the activities listed in the class timetable.

Important: Distance education (external mode) students do not need to attend classes. You will find all the information you need to start studying in your Unit Learning Site and Course Enrolment Guide.

11. Check the Class Timetable

You will need to check the class timetable to find out when classes have been scheduled for the activities that have been planned for the on-campus units in which you are enrolled.

  1. Go to the online timetables search webpage
  2. Search for your first enrolled unit (use the search criteria to narrow your search)
  3. Take a note of the classes planned for the unit at your location or print the page.
  4. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each of your enrolled units
  5. Now, plan your week. Which classes best match your needs? Remember you must attend one class for each activity planned for each of your units.

Example: if the classes planned are Workshop 1, Workshop 2, and workshop 3, then the activity is “Workshop”, and you need to attend one workshop class. Choose workshop 1 workshop 2 or workshop 3 (not all workshop classes).

Once you have worked out the best timetable you are ready to register into those particular classes.

Important: Classes are generally timetabled between the hours of 8:00am and 6:00pm but some classes may be timetabled outside these hours.

The class timetable is published on the web no less than 4 weeks before a study period starts — you will receive an email in your SCU Webmail account to tell you when the timetable is available.

Room numbers are provided in the timetable only after the timetable has been finalised.

12. Register for on-campus classes

Trimester Students DO NOT register into classes as there is usually only one class to attend. Just turn up for your first class.

Session students must check to see whether you need to register into any classes. Classes fill up quickly so register in your chosen classes early. You will receive an email in your SCU Webmail account to let you know when registration will open.

  1. Within My Enrolment select My Classes (or classes from the header line menu) The units in which you are enrolled will be displayed.
  2. Register into your chosen on-campus classes.

Classes are opened for registration progressively over one week about three weeks before the Study Period starts. The progressive opening schedule is provided here:
