Research interests / background
Dr Nicholas Ward is currently a project officer and safety support officer at Southern Cross GeoScience. He holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in geology with chemistry, a postgraduate Diploma of Applied Science in hydrology, a Master of Science (Merit) in physical geography, and a PhD in environmental geochemistry.
Nicholas has more than 15 years of experience in environmental research and has been involved in a variety of projects at the Centre for Acid Sulfate Soil Research (CASSR), Southern Cross University. Prior to arriving at the centre, Nicholas worked as scientist/hydrologist for Opus International Consultants Ltd. and Electricity Corporation of New Zealand Ltd. in Wellington, New Zealand. Nicholas has also worked in the acid sulfate soil section in the Environmental Analysis Laboratory (EAL) and EAL Consulting at Southern Cross University.
Nicholas completed his PhD research at Southern Cross University in 2004 examining the process of sulfide oxidation in acid sulfate soil materials. The findings of this research led to the revision of the peroxide oxidation techniques used to determine the potential hazard of acid sulfate soil materials. Nicholas has been involved in ARC funded acid sulfate soil research at CASSR including an ARC-Linkage Grant examining effluent re-use in an acid sulfate soil landscape, and an ARC-Linkage Grant for a study of sulfur cycling in acid sulfate soil landscapes.
Nicholas has 12 peer reviewed papers in international scientific journals and has written numerous technical reports in the field of acid sulfate soil research.
