Research interests / background
Richard Bush is a founding Director of Southern Cross Geoscience, a Special Research Centre of Southern Cross University, and Professor of Water Research. His research interests are soil science and soil water interactions in agricultural and urban landscapes.
Professor Bush has developed successful research partnerships with industry, communities and government agencies. Over the past decade Professor Bush has focused on coastal floodplain management and in particular, the international issue of acid sulfate soils and recently has broadened research to inland salinity and floodplain management.
His research addresses declining soil and water quality in landscapes, specifically acidification of coastal floodplains and its impacts on wetland and estuarine health and salinisation of inland soils and rivers. He has published over 70 refereed papers, and in the past 5 years has won in excess of $6 million dollars of competitive funding to support his research.
Specific research interests include
- Contemporary sulfur biomineralisation in acid sulfate soils
- Iron and sulfur transformations in soils/sediments
- Environmental geochemistry and mineralogy
- Biogeochemical cycling in coastal lowlands
- Fluvial sedimentology and stratigraphy in river morphology and soil development
- Chronology of alluvial floodplain sediments in the Quaternary
- Surface-groundwater interactions of alluvial floodplain systems
- River and wetland management and rehabilitation for sustainable ecosystems
