Southern Cross University is committed to providing all students with the support services necessary to ensure a successful academic and personal experience. In addition to the normal support services, international students are provided with a range of specialist services and the University prides itself on providing international students with the highest level of support possible. The staff-student ratio in the International Office is the best at any university in Australia. International OfficeThe International Office is located on the Lismore campus of the University and is responsible for the orientation and on-going welfare of all international students. It provides international students with important support services while they are studying at the University. A similar service is also provided at the Coffs Harbour Campus. Services provided include: - pre-departure information;
- airport reception;
- accommodation placement;
- comprehensive orientation;
- full-time Student Adviser;
- organisation of social activities and excursions;
- visa and health insurance advice;
- a returning home function for graduating students.
International Student AdvisorA full-time Student Adviser is available in the International Office to help students with any personal or academic problems. Where the adviser is unable to assist, students will be referred to the appropriate agency for assistance. The Adviser also organises the orientation program for new international students as well as many social activities and excursions. English LecturerAn English lecturer is available to provide on-going English and study skills support to international students. Other Services- A medical service is staffed by qualified doctors. A full range of general practice services is available including medical tests, pathology and emergency treatment.
- A free Dental Service is available on the Lismore campus.
- Counsellors offer free and confidential assistance to students experiencing difficulties in any aspect of their lives, including issues of an academic or personal nature.
- Careers Advisory Service provides assistance with decision-making for courses and future careers. Other services include individual and group counselling, career library, casual and part time work, seminars and workshops (e.g. preparing employment applications, interview techniques).
- Religious Guidance: the Chaplain is available to assist with personal goal setting, confidential counselling and support. A prayer room is available for Muslim students.
- Student Associations cater for the social, cultural, sporting and recreational aspects of University life. Band nights, film evenings, dinner dances and lunch time entertainment as well as community oriented seminars and functions are arranged. Catering outlets provide a variety of food at reasonable prices. The Associations also offer academic and welfare support and representation for all students, as well as advice on any academic and discrimination matters including appeals.
- Students with disabilities are asked to contact the International Office as soon as possible to discuss their special needs.
