Computer Software Updates

Keeping your computer software updated is an extremely important step towards protecting against viruses, malicious code and hacker exploits. This is especially the case for Microsoft Windows based computers but also increasingly the case for Apple Mac and Linux based systems.

Why are software updates necessary?

The reason software updates are necessary is that software can be targeted via malicious code or hackers attempting to exploit vulnerabilities found in operating systems and applications.

These exploits may allow hackers to gain control of your computer or may make your computer vulnerable to viruses and other malicious code.

The only way of treating this is to keep software on computers automatically updated.

Computers on Campus: All staff and student (lab machine) computers are already pre-configured to receive automatic updates.

Home Users: Staff and Students who connect to the Internet from home should ensure they set their computer to receive automatic updates.
