The 3rd National Acid Sulfate Soil Conference
A lot has changed since the last national acid sulfate soil conference in 1996.
Our understanding of how and where acid sulfate soils form has grown considerably and we have since found that they exist in every state and territory. Along with extensive deposits around Australia's coastline they've also been found inland, in areas such as the Western Australian wheat belt, alpine areas of Tasmania and wetlands throughout the Murray-Darling Basin.
Nationwide, planning regulations and policies have been adopted to manage the disturbance of acid sulfate soils. If you are excavating or dewatering acid sulfate soils anywhere in Australia, you now need to demonstrate beforehand how you are going to manage and mitigate the impacts.
These changes have increased the number and diversity of people involved with the management of acid sulfate soils. Acid sulfate soil management is now a specialist activity involving many hundreds of working professionals in both the private and public sector.
Federal, state and local government officers, researchers, consultants, developers, contractors, regional NRM boards and landcare groups are all working to protect the environment and local infrastructure from the impacts of acid sulfate soils.
Given all that has been learnt in the past sixteen years, it's time to come together again to share our experiences and exchange ideas. There is much to learn from each other.

Conference hosts
Southern Cross GeoScience is a Special Research Centre of Southern Cross University, dedicated to improving our understanding and management of the natural environment. Founded by Professor Leigh Sullivan and Professor Richard Bush, the Centre conducts both fundamental and applied research, which spans from the molecular level to the management of broad scale landscapes. In 2010, Southern Cross University was awarded the highest ranking of 5 for "outstanding performance well above world standard" in the field of geochemistry, by the Australian Research Council.
The Centre also has a strong focus on education and training, including undergraduate and postgraduate as well as professional short courses for external clients. Hosting the 3rd National Acid Sulfate Soil Conference builds upon Southern Cross GeoScience's role as an information provider and demonstrates its commitment to building the capacity of stakeholders involved with acid sulfate soils.

Conference aim
The multi-disciplinary conference is set to attract a wide range of stakeholders, and the focus will be on providing current information, exchanging experiences and creating opportunities for discussion, debate and networking. The conference's overall aim is to facilitate information exchange between stakeholders currently involved with acid sulfate soils.
