General information
Conference location
Acid sulfate soils are now a national issue, and the conference location has been chosen with that in mind. We now know that they occur in every state and territory, and large areas of acid sulfate soils can be found in and around Melbourne.
Mapping in Victoria has identified 250,000ha of coastal land with the potential to contain acid sulfate soil. The majority of potential coastal acid sulfate soil surrounds Port Phillip Bay and east to the Gippsland Lakes, with other smaller pockets found along the coastline.
Victoria has come a long way in identifying and managing acid sulfate soils, and has in recent years published the Victorian Coastal Acid Sulfate Soil Strategy and Best Practice Guidelines for Assessing and Managing Coastal Acid Sulfate Soils.
Acid sulfate soils are gaining increasing prominence as an important natural resource issue in Victoria, and interest in the subject is high.
The conference organisers hope the 3rd National Acid Sulfate Soil Conference contributes to the growing momentum in Victoria and clearly demonstrates the importance of managing acid sulfate soil appropriately.
