I am an experienced researcher … or so I thought! The book confirmed that whilst I had great knowledge in some aspects of my research, I really did need to be exposed to a lot of the information it contained. I will be passing it onto a friend to assist in her teaching degree – filling in the blanks that she has from her first degree and improving her ability to balance family and study, and improve her research and essay writing.

Geoff Hallmann, PhD student

I have found the book inspiring at times but more so reassuring. Reassuring, because the book highlights various strategies and tools for better organising, and I have been using many of them in my job as a Post-Doc for the last six years. The book has however helped me to improve some of my current organising strategies. In addition, the book has provided various suggestions and after reading them I have thought of simple ideas to improve my current strategies even further. On several occasions I have felt, “Why did I not think of this before?”  This text book is perfect for PhD students especially at the beginning of their candidature.

Agnelo Furtado, Post doctoral researcher

This book is truly different from all other research related books I have read. For me the balanced approach of technology and organisational tools/strategies was highly beneficial. The idea that learning about technology is an investment rather than a waste of time has been helpful to me. The chapter on literature searching is a goldmine of really useful tips and techniques. Having tried many of the featured software from the website I now have a far greater understanding of ‘what’s out there’ and could be useful for my work (and my supervisors). It has certainly opened my eyes to strategies and tools that I did not know existed.

Mike Williams, Research Manager

I must say that I am delighted and surprised at the extent of the positive impact of applying some of the new workplace management tactics promoted by reading the book. As the text is such a good source and is organised in a way that makes it easy to access the required information on ‘new’ Web searching tools, I use it as my starting point and commit to exploring these tools at opportune times in the near future.

Slade Lee, Research Manager

This book is very useful as many of the organisational strategies and technical tools described help me to be more organised in my research. There were many things that I put off doing because I didn't think I had the time. When I did make the time to do them, it turned out to be a rewarding process. The book is a really valuable resource, and I know that it will still be useful to me after I have finished my candidature.

The book gave me some good tips for organising my desk space … these changes have cumulatively resulted in an uncluttered desk and I do really think that it makes a difference!

Mark Jackson, PhD student

As a result of reading this book, I now regard taking the time to learn new tools and programs as an investment in my own personal development, confidence building and an essential part of becoming a competent researcher.
