| The
Centre for Animal Conservation Genetics is located on the Southern
Cross University campus in Lismore in northern New South Wales,
Australia. The region is known biogeographically as the "Macleay McPherson
Overlap Zone", an area of exceptionally high biodiversity
where the northern Torresian and southern Bassian faunas and floras
of Australia meet and overlap. As a consequence, the region
has the richest fauna in Australia for birds, bats, amphibians
and snakes. The Centre for Animal Conservation Genetics, headed by Professor
Peter Baverstock, focusses research on three areas of study. They
are molecular evolution, molecular population genetics, and new
techniques for molecular studies.
The Centre has attracted a high level of external
research grants, supporting a range of postgraduate
studies, resulting in publications on a range of topics in Vertebrate Conservation Genetics,
including the Humpback Whale, Koala, Hastings River Mouse, and
the Gouldian Finch.
