Activating Human Rights & Peace:
Universal Responsibility

An International Conference
Byron Bay Community and Cultural Centre
Byron Bay, NSW, Australia
1st - 4th July 2008

“I believe that to meet the challenges of our times, human beings will have to develop a greater sense of universal responsibility. Each of us must learn to work not just for one self, one’s own family or one’s nation, but for the benefit of all humankind. Universal responsibility is the key to human survival. It is the best foundation for world peace.” – Dalai Lama

This international conference is for everyone who cares passionately about human rights and peace, and who wish to activate/re-activate human rights and peace and their importance in the twenty-first century.

The conference will provide a crucial and critical learning space for activating human rights and peace in relation to the fields of law, justice, culture, humanities, education, politics, spirituality and health.

A major focus of the conference is to invite participants to exchange ideas and experiences about human rights, questions of peace and their implications across these fields. The conference is interdisciplinary as well as activist in approach.

This conference is hosted by the Centre for Peace and Social Justice, Southern Cross University; in collaboration with the Hawke Research Institute's Centre for Peace, Conflict & Mediation, University of South Australia; the Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies, University of Queensland, the College of Law, University of Iowa, USA, and the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, Australia.
