Thursday : Plenary 4:
Lillian Holt

Human Rights and The Human Condition.
Human Rights, especially in relation to Indigenous people in Australia, are most often spoken of and dealt with in a very structural and statistical manner.

The problem is always "other" and "out there".   Hence, the "problem" remains the "problem" (i.e. "Aboriginal problem") as a result of externalising it.  The sterility of statistics often detracts from the dignity and humanity of people.
Human rights call into question our own humanity and who we all are as players, especially in the Australian context of identity, past and future, of this country.
Lillian Holt, who has worked in Aboriginal education, for the past thirty years, believes that a more inclusive language and holistic approach is needed to address some of the issues.  For instance, the stories behind the statistics need to be told.

Reflection as well as action is needed along with listening, hearing and heeding.
