Animal Research Ethics

Who needs ethical clearance?

The scope of the NSW Animal Research Act 1985 covers anyone who wishes to conduct research involving the use of animals. Animals for the purposes of this Act include any vertebrate, other than a human being; that is, any mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian or fish.

The Animal Care and Ethics Committee

The Animal Care and Ethics Committee at Southern Cross University has been established as a legal requirement for conduct of research into animals under provisions of the NSW Animal Research Act 1985.

Animal research includes the use of animals in experimental research; abnormal husbandry or dietary conditions; collection of blood, tissue or other body samples; teaching; diagnoses; product testing; feeding trials and field surveys.

People wishing to undertake any form of animal research are required to lodge an application for research approval on a specific form [Model Protocol Form, Appendix 1 MS Word: 336k]. All such proposals must be considered and approved by the Animal Care and Ethics Committee and an Animal Research Authority issued to allow the work to proceed
