For Jessica Waldron, the idea of doing something meaningful to help others was the motivating factor in choosing to study a Bachelor of Nursing at Southern Cross University. For Jessica Waldron, the idea of doing something meaningful to help others was the motivating factor in choosing to study a Bachelor of Nursing at Southern Cross University. Jessica, who lives at Clunes with her parents Helen and Peter Waldron, was awarded the $5,000 2010 Mayor of Lismore Scholarship for Academic Achievement. “Beginning my studies with such a wonderful financial boost has been a dream come true,” said Jessica, who was formerly a student at Kadina High School in Goonellabah. “As long as I can remember I have liked the idea of working in a health profession. My father has motor neurone disease and I truly understand the importance of good medical and nursing care in supporting people going through times of ill health. “I wanted to stay local so I could be with my family and offer them my support through this challenging period, so it was fortunate for me that my local university also offered the course I wanted to study and that it had such a good reputation for teaching nursing.” Jessica will use her windfall to help offset her HECS tax debt and buy textbooks. But she still plans to keep on with her part-time job as well, as a retail assistant in gift shop, Shop 117, in Keen Street, Lismore. |
