“Thankfully, I was the lucky recipient of the Norm Innis Foundation Indigenous Scholarship for the Diploma of Sport Management Surfing Studies. The scholarship covered my course, textbook and equipment costs whilst also creating time and funds to reconnect with my culture.” Throughout her time at Southern Cross University, the scholarship assisted several cultural trips throughout QLD and NSW. It also aided an invitation to camp for a week with the women elders of Mutitjulu at Uluru whilst studying for the Diploma. In July 2009 on successful completion of her Diploma Janine went on her first overseas trip venturing to Bali and Lombok; wild places and great waves that made her appreciate Australia even more. Janine says: “If you love surfing and want to study management fundamentals in an interesting and exciting course, enrol in the Diploma at SCU. The units covered give incite into the business of surfing, and the skills learnt can be channelled either nationally or internationally into different areas of the industry.” “It also creates opportunity to network and allows one to improve his or her surfing in fun waves, warm water and lots of sunshine, plus you never know who you might run into.” And what about the future now she has finished her course at Southern Cross University? “It is in the hands of the ancestors to lead, and I’ll follow.” |
