Insurance cover for students

Students of the University are covered under a number of insurance policies when involved in approved University activities.

Personal Accident insurance

The University has arranged Personal Accident Insurance for its enrolled students.

Public Liability insurance

The University has a Public Liability insurance policy which protects the University, including staff members, students, voluntary workers and others (as listed in the policy wording) for amounts that they shall become legally liable to pay to third parties as compensation by reason of personal injury (including death), and property damage caused by an occurrence in connection with University business.

The policy provides coverage anywhere in Australia and New Zealand, and also includes special provision for overseas coverage but to ensure full coverage this must be referred to the Manager, Insurance and Risk Management, Kazia Lombardo [t: 6620 3696; e: kazia.lombardo@scu.edu.au] prior to going overseas.

Note: For protection to be provided under the University's policies, work experience undertaken by the student must be relevant to the student's course of study and must be endorsed by the Head of School/Department or Executive Dean.If the student receives remuneration from the host organisation with which they are working they would then be deemed to be employees of that organisation and the University's liability insurance would no longer apply.

A Certificate of Currency for the University's Public Liability policy is available, upon request, from the Manager, Insurance and Risk Management, Kazia Lombardo [t: 6620 3696; e: kazia.lombardo@scu.edu.au] .

Workers' Compensation insurance

This policy relates to benefits payable under the Workers' Compensation legislation for employees of the University. Students, unless they are specifically employed by the University, are NOT covered by its Workers' Compensation insurance.

As mentioned above, if the student receives remuneration from the host organisation with which they are working they would then be deemed to be employees of that organisation.

Travel insurance

The University's Travel insurance provides worldwide coverage for employees, students and certain other parties travelling on University business or for University approved coursework activities.

Personal Property of Students
The University does NOT insure the personal effects of students such as clothing, furniture, jewellery, study materials, iPods, computers, mobile phones, cameras etc.

Nor does it protect students against claims against them for damage or injury caused by them to others in relation to non-University activities; accommodation including residential colleges and private rental properties; sporting or recreational activities etc.

Note: The above information is provided as a guide only. Please refer specific questions to the relevant University Insurance Officer.
