Martin Gill
Principal, Lismore Public School
Bachelor of Teaching (1995) - now available as Bachelor of Education (Primary)

I feel privileged to hold the position of principal in a NSW public school. In that role, I am responsible for overseeing the effective implementation of educational, cultural, sporting and welfare programs at Lismore Public School. I also work closely with colleagues from other schools and within the department. Maintaining a focus on high quality pedagogy to ensure engagement of all students in a comprehensive public school is both challenging and incredibly rewarding.

I have been fortunate to secure work in a range of schools in regional NSW – from large primary schools, to small central schools. Studying at Southern Cross University ensured that I had a good understanding of curriculum, the teaching and learning cycle and educational theory. But more importantly, the University ensured I had a realistic idea of what to expect in schools. The strong links between the University and local schools was evident and the extensive practicum component was especially beneficial. So the transition from study to full-time work was an easy one to make.

I chose to study at Southern Cross University because it has always had a great reputation in education. It was reasonably local for me, and the cost of living in Lismore was significantly lower than in metropolitan areas.

In the future, I will engage in postgraduate studies. Southern Cross University will be the first institution I approach.
