The Sustainable Forestry Program at Southern Cross University (SCU) in Australia, is coordinating a Pre-IUFRO World Congress August 2005 workshop:

Improving Productivity in Mixed-Species Plantations

5-7 August at Southern Cross University - before IUFRO starts in Brisbane

Mixed species plantations are often promoted as being preferable environmentally to "monocultures" however they are rarely considered operationally viable by commercial forest growers. This workshop aims to quantify the potential of mixtures to sustain or enhance growth and productivity, soil fertility, tree and stand health, wood quality, and plantation economics. We also request presentations that consider whether measured productivity gains in mixed species plantations, compared with monoculture plantations, could make mixtures a commercially attractive option.
  Call for Abstracts
A number of international guests will be presenting papers and we also invite papers on the following topics:

Productivity in mixed and pure plantations

Differences in insect and disease problems in mixed-species plantings

Challenges of making mixed-species plantations operational

.Workshop outcomes anticipate a collection of refereed papers edited by Jerry Vanclay & J. Doland Nichols, Sustainable Forestry Program, SCU.

Abstracts past due: 30 April 2005
