The establishment of Living with Cancer Education Programs for people of non-English speaking background.
The Living with Cancer Education Program was developed in the 1980s to inform and educate people with cancer, their families and friends. Since then the program has found national acceptance and is an important strategy for families to cope with cancer. In the 1990s it was recognised that this program should be modified so that it was relevant to people for non-English speaking backgrounds who make up more than 25% of people with cancer.
Programs have since been successfully developed in the Italian, Greek and Spanish-speaking communities. Much of this success is dues to the adoption of an action research framework which utilised the skills of health professionals from non-Englishing speaking backgrounds.
More recently problems have arisen in maintaining those programs. While this is partly due to funding cuts in Victoria, it is also due to the inequities that are part of the structure of the health and community sector. This workshop addresses the reasons simple programs of affirmative action may face difficulties in the area of health program development for people from non-English speaking backgrounds.
