Professional Development

Through consultation with Government and private sector businesses and organisations Gnibi will develop a range of intensive professional development courses to meet the needs of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous professionals working with Indigenous people.

Participants will develop an appreciation of contemporary social and cultural issues in the context of Indigenous peoples' history, values and ways of living. This knowledge will improve and enhance the interaction between individuals and organisations dealing with Indigenous communities with the aim of generating mutually beneficial outcomes.

Gnibi's professional development courses are suitable for people working across a wide range of career areas which may include:

  • health
  • business
  • environmental studies
  • counseling and social work
  • sports
  • tourism
  • legal and corrective services
  • music or the arts
  • research

Candidates may currently be working as field officers in rural or remote Australia, or they may be working in advisory roles living and working in major cities.

Graduates may also choose to pursue careers working with Indigenous people in overseas countries.

Flexible Study Options

Students may, depending on their background and experience, enrol in either undergraduate or postgraduate qualifications. Both are offered full-time and the undergraduate programs are offered part-time with on-campus and distance education options.

Students studying at the undergraduate level are able to complete a qualification to Diploma level after the equivalent of one year of full-time study. This course is available by distance education allowing students to study from anywhere in Australia or overseas and at a time that fits with their busy personal and professional lives.

Postgraduate studies are available to candidates who have a recognised first degree or those who can demonstrate relevant work or life experiences. These courses are delivered via distance education enhanced with a series of short intensive compulsory residential workshops each semester.
