The School or Arts and Social Sciences offers a range of opportunities to study writing, with a Writing major in the Bachelor of Arts, an Honours program and a PhD with a focus on writing, and our unique Associate Degree of Creative Writing.

The writing program specifically promotes the type of creative learning needed by cutting-edge writers where craft is always coupled with literature and theory. Genres and forms studied in all courses employ both fiction and creative nonfiction styles and include life writing, experimental writing and writing for performance. In project units, students can develop their own projects and further their independent learning.

Academics teaching in the program are practising writers and researchers, some of whom formed an award-winning team at a 2010 Australian Learning and Teaching Council grant for the ongoing delivery of innovative teaching approaches.

The supportive learning environment at SCU inspires and encourages students to explore avenues for promoting and publishing their works. Students have won residencies at Varuna, and prose and poetry competitions such as the NSW Writers' Centre Genre Fiction Award, Salt on Your Tongue, Nimbin Performance Poetry World Cup and Lismore Poetry Cup. A significant number of creative research/writing-based PhDs and Honours students win Australian Postgraduate Awards.
