Return to Contemporary Music index

Over the past decade or so, staff and students of the Contemporary Music program have been very active as writers, recording artists, engineers and producers, and a large number of professional recordings have been created in the university recording studios, as well as in other local and national studios. Many of these recordings have received significant commercial airplay and critical acclaim, and virtually every imaginable contemporary musical genre can be heard coming out of the program.

The list below provides a few examples of recordings involving present and past staff and students during the past decade.

Africussia d'volv. Africussia (2003)

(Jim Kelly - steel string guitar, Peter Martin - electric guitar; Jon Fitzgerald - nylon string guitar); Move Records Acoustic-electric guitar trio with influences from world music, jazz and blues. Has toured in Australia, South-East Asia and South Korea.

John Shand (Sydney Morning Herald, July 2003) says: "The secret to the collective magic lies in the players' deep understanding of how to combine the sounds of three different guitars: steel'string acoustic (Jim Kelly), electric (Peter Martin) and nylon'string (Jon Fitzgerald). Fastidious arranging allows each instrument to sing, and exemplary recording ensures that the overtones of one do not cancel out those of another. Varied compositions and imaginative improvising complete the picture. This is to music what candles are to light.-
