Southern Cross understands that students need to maintain a healthy balance between academic, sport and social life. The Office of Sport and Cultural Activates (OSCA) is SCU’s gateway to numerous sporting and recreational events held throughout the academic year.

OSCA offers students interested in sport the opportunity to participate in the following ways:

Australian University Sport (AUS) is the peak governing body of university sport in Australia. AUS facilitates and encourages university sport as an integral part of uni life. AUS also provides university students with the opportunity to participate in competitive sport at a regional, national and international level.

Here at Southern Cross, we encourage our students to participate in a range of organised sporting activities. Besides our social sport program, we offer students the chance to participate in AUS events such as the Regional and Australian University games, as well as University Snow Sport and Twenty-20 Cricket Championships. Many university students identify competing at University Games and Championships as a major highlight of their university life.

What are the Uni Games all about?

Over the years, SCU has proudly been involved in a number of AUS events and this year will be no different.

The Games are recognised as a perfect opportunity for university athletes to compete against each other in regional and national multi-sport events. The Games have built up a reputation as a not-to-be-missed event, attracting over 6,000 participants each year.

Uni Games events provide a great opportunity to meet other uni students from both SCU and all over Australia. Off the sporting field, the Games offer an action-packed social program that is run to complement the sporting activities. The social program includes various events such as theme nights and dress-up competitions as well as novelty events and competitions that enhance the event experience for participants.

In 2011 we are looking to send various sporting teams to the Eastern and Australian University Games as well as other Championship events.

Australian University Games (25th– 30th September)

Since its foundation in 1993, the Australian University Games (AUG) has grown to be Australia largest annual multi-sport event. Held each September/October, the Games is renowned for providing a friendly but competitive environment for all Australian university athletes.

SCU is always keen to send teams and individuals to the Games. In 2009 SCU sent a spirited team to the games on the Gold Coast. The stand out performance from Team SCU was Krystell Lucas, who won gold in the women’s Shot Put. This was an improvement on Krystell’s performance in the Melbourne, 2008 AUGs where she received bronze. Other successful SCU teams in 2009 included women’s and mixed netball, men’s basketball, open lawn bowls and mixed touch.

This year the AUGs are to be held on the Gold Coast, Queensland. The games are to be held from the 25th to the 30th of September, with 31 sports being contested such as athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Rugby Union 7's, Surfing, Swimming, Tennis, Tenpin Bowling, Touch, Ultimate Frisbee, Volleyball and Water Polo.

Again, if you’re keen to get involved, keep an eye on out at OSCA for registration, fees and key dates.
