Thea's background is mainly in the field of Intensive Care where she worked as a Clinical Nurse Specialist following completion of the Intensive Care Certificate with the College of Nursing Australia. In the early 90's she completed a Bachelor of Science degree with first class Honours and was awarded the University Medal in Biology. Her Honours project examined the influence of ultraviolet light on anuran physiology. During that time she taught biochemistry, physiology, and various other biology subjects to biology and nursing students at the University of Wollongong. She began lecturing in Biomedical Science at SCU in 1996 and completed a Master of Health Sciences degree in 2001 and a PhD in 2010. Her doctoral research topic was 'A cross cultural comparison of health care students' hand hygiene knowledge, beliefs and practices', which involved surveying Australian, Greek, Italian, and Swedish nursing and medical students using an instrument that she developed and validated (the Hand Hygiene Questionnaire). Thea's research interests include infection control, wound healing and the effects of stress on the human body. She is also conducting research in the area of continuous curriculum improvement. In 2008, Thea was awarded a Vice Chancellor's Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning (SCU) and in 2009 she was awarded an Australian Learning and Teaching Council Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning for 'Sustained leadership in curriculum design, practice and strategies to inspire and motivate students in the study of science within nursing.' |
