For Year 10 Students

This page has been put together for Year 10 students to help you think over the issues surrounding Year 12 and beyond.

Choosing the subjects you want to study, a university course and a career can seem like an enormous task, but if you stay focussed on recognising what you do well and what you like doing then it becomes easier to find the path that waits ahead for you. At the same time, it’s always good to keep an open mind and let yourself be inspired, even by the unexpected.

What should I be doing in Year 10?

It’s time to start thinking about what career suits you. Here are a few starters to help you make up your mind.

Tip 1: You need passion — job satisfaction is more often than not linked to working in an area that is of personal interest to you. Imagine being paid for doing what you enjoy. Are you passionate about travel, sport, caring for others, arts, technology or the environment? Your passion can become your career.

Tip 2: Start at the end — reading the Employment section of newspapers allows you to tap into the range of established career options available. It is a means for you to review the types of duties and roles expected of you; analyse your employment prospects for the future; and familiarise yourself with the salary bracket for each job type.

Tip 3: Discover who you are — many people enjoy quizzes which allow them to match their personality type with possible careers. One site worth a visit is MyFuture which offers career direction and future planning.

Tip 4: Skill up — by now you have probably narrowed down your ‘possible career list’ to one or two choices. In many cases this is where you will have to consider the further development of your competencies and knowledge through study. For detailed information, you may wish to visit Course Options and browse available courses, or download a Course Brochure.

Tip 5: Pacify the mind — at Southern Cross University we offer you the opportunity to book your own personalised campus tour with one of our Student Ambassadors. This will give you the chance to visit the campus of your choice and allow you the opportunity to better consider your options with your guide as well as Southern Cross University staff.

Do I need to study specific subjects to study at Southern Cross University?

No. At Southern Cross University we understand that high school students often change their mind as they find out more about the range of career opportunities during senior school years and even after they leave high school. That’s why the courses at Southern Cross University have no mandatory pre-requisites.

How do I take a personal Campus Tour?

So you can see what Southern Cross University is like, you can visit any of our campuses at any time. Contact us before you arrive, so we can personalise your campus tour. You’ll be able to meet and speak with all the people you need to, about the courses you’re interested in as well as university life in general. You might even be able to meet students who are already enrolled in the course you’re interested in taking. Our Student Ambassadors will help you make the most of your tour!

For more information — or to book your own campus tour — just phone 02 6620 3975 during business hours or email campustours@scu.edu.au.
