Monitoring and Reporting
The SCU Sustainability Officer is responsible for ensuring effective monitoring and reporting of sustainability initiatives in the teaching, learning and operational activities of Southern Cross University.
Monitoring
A project officer was appointed in 2010 to collect and analyse greenhouse gas emissions related data such as electricity, gas and vehicle fuel consumption; air travel; waste; and comparative data including EFTSL, FTE and floor area (m2) for the University. Further, in the SCU Greenhouse Gas Emissions 2009/10 report produced from this analysis, recommendations to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions were made.
The sub-metering system currently being installed on all buildings at Lismore Campus will also enable higher-definition monitoring of electricity and water consumption from mid-2010.
Reporting
Southern Cross University has a number of reporting options and obligations including:
NSW Council on Environmental Education - Annual progress report for Learning for Sustainability: NSW Environmental Education Plan (currently 2007-10).
Commonwealth University Management Benchmarking Programme - annual report includes the topic 'Management of Sustainability' (F227):
- 227.1 Strategic Context and Policy;
- 227.2 Education and Research;
- 227.3 Operational Considerations;
- 227.4 Administration and Finance; and
- 227.5 Communication, Review and Feedback.
Tertiary Education Facilities Management Association (TEFMA) - annual reporting of performance indicators relevant to sustainability such as:
- Cleaning and waste management
- Maintenance and refurbishment
- Water consumption
- Energy consumption
- Carbon emissions (building-related energy use)*
TEFMA prepares an annual benchmark report - 61 tertiary institutions in Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong took part. For more information contact Facilities Management and Services.
*SCU did not participate in this aspect in 2008 but is expected to in future.
Sustainability is also reported annually in the SCU Annual Report from 2008.
