Biography

I commenced at SCU in 2008 and ended my full-time continuing position 2017. I'm currently Adjunct Lecturer. I am a writer and have worked as an editor. I've taught at the universities of Canberra, Adelaide and Flinders, TAFE and to community groups; given single seminars at the universities of Western Sydney and South Australia.

Research

My discipline is Creative Writing. I have received Australia Council and Arts SA writing grants, a Varuna and Barbara Hanrahan Fellowship and a Monash University Writer's Residency. I have four books of creative work and work in scholarly and literary journals, anthologies and books. For Non-Traditional Research Outcomes, this work is often accompanied by a critical or exegetical essay.

Community engagement

Member of Arts and Culture Policy Advisory Group, Lismore City Council. Secretary, Friends Lismore Regional Gallery. Read/perform my work at various venues. Chaired sessions at the Brisbane, Bellingen and Bryon Bay Writers Festivals. Wrote a wine review column for the Northern Rivers Echo, The Village Journal and Clunes Clues. Organised/co-organised eight readings in the Northern Rivers.

Supervision

Principal: one Masters and six PhDs.

Co-supervisor: three PhDs.

Examined several PhDs and Masters: universities of Canberra, New South Wales, Western Sydney, Adelaide, Victoria, Deakin, CQU, SQU and RMIT).

Honours: Supervised four theses to first-class, and three more. Examined several Honours theses from Griffith University, the University of Adelaide, SCU etc.

Teaching

2008-2017: Introduction to Creative Writing, Prose, Writing Genre, Writing from the Edge, Writing Short Stories, Issues and Themes in Contemporary Writing, Food and Wine Writing, Introduction to Editing and Publishing, and supervised in Independent and Writing Projects. Formerly taught in TAFE, to community groups, University of Adelaide, Flinders University, University of Canberra.
