Mick Bowen is currently the Manager, Customer Service in the Technology Services work unit. Mick commenced in this role in July 2017 after spending the past 15yrs as the Coffs Harbour Campus I.T. Services Manager and 6yrs as the Manager, Desktop Services.

The Manager, Customer Service role is to manage a team of staff, across all University campuses, who provide Service Desk services, Mailroom and Switchboard and undertake maintenance and support for the University?s desktop technology environments. This is achieved by applying best practice to all these areas and effective management and development of multiple and diverse technical teams.

As Manager, Customer Service, Mick is responsible for planning and coordinating the processes required for the development, distribution and management of hardware, the Standard Operating Environment, applications and systems necessary for effective IT asset and lifecycle management.

In this role Mick manages relationships with a diverse range of internal and external client groups and ensures desktop and end user support services are provided consistent with organisational needs. In addition, Mick represents Technology Services on various relevant committees.

Some (ancient) History.

Mick commenced work in the IT industry in 1984 whilst employed by the NSW Department of School Education at Wagga Wagga in the Riverina Region of New South Wales. He worked with a number of systems that managed primary and secondary school staffing and professional development courses for teachers.

In 1986 Mick moved on to the NSW Police Service providing I.T. support and data entry centre management in an area covering the southwest corner of the state from Broken Hill to Albury, Queanbeyan and Wagga Wagga. These centres were responsible for data entry of all crime reports and shooters licence applications from all the surrounding Police Stations.

With a well established grounding in distributed computing Mick was successful in appointment to State Forests of NSW as their Computer Support Officer based in Coffs Harbour. In this role Mick was heavily involved in the rollout of a Unix-based wide area network covering all of NSW, focusing on his area of support covering Tamworth, Glen Innes, Inverell, Casino, Murwillumbah, Grafton and a number of other Forestry offices down the mid north coast to Port Macquarie. In this role Mick experienced his first taste of what was later to become the Internet. State Forests utilised all the Unix protocols that now make up the Internet to create their wide and local area networks.

From 1992 to 1995 Mick was a School Administration Advisory Officer with the NSW Department of School Education based in Coffs Harbour. Mick provided School Administration and Finance systems support and training to over a hundred schools between Kew near Port Macquarie to Grafton on the mid north coast of New South Wales. This role also involved providing advice and guidance to schools and school councils on financial management. Mick Coffs Harbour
