I am a marine ecologist with over a decade of experience on reef-building corals and their microalgal symbionts. I am particularly interested in research that advances insights into how corals and the reefs they build may adapt to warming oceans. I work in both, tropical and subtropical systems. Dr Ali Reza Alaei obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Mysore, India, in 2012. For his PhD thesis, he worked on the segmentation and recognition of handwritten document images. He has since worked as a Post-Doc research fellow at the Computer Science Laboratory of Tours (LIFAT - EA 6300), Université François Rabelais de Tours, France, from June 2012 to July 2015. His Postdoc research work at the University of Tours was on fast detection and recognition of symbols (logos) in administrative document images enabling fast document retrieval, classification, and on the problem of image quality assessment. He has been a research fellow at the Griffith School of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and latterly at the Griffith Institute for Tourism (GIFT) on several Big Data projects. His research focuses on artificial intelligence in general and data analysis, document image analysis & recognition, pattern recognition, and biometrics. He has published more than 50 research papers in high-quality international journals and conference proceedings. He has further developed a strong collaboration with many national and international laboratories/universities in Australia, India and France. He has served as a conference organizing chair, organizing committee member, and program committee member in various international conferences and workshops, including ICDAR, ICPR, ACPR, ICFHR, DAS, ICSIP, CVIP, ASAR, and PR4MCA. He is the reviewer of more than ten 'A' ranked international journals, including IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, IEEE Transactions on Human-Machine Systems, IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, Pattern Recognition, and Pattern Recognition Letters. His research interest includes Big Data analysis, statistical data modelling, symbolic data analysis, human perception modelling, pattern recognition, image processing, document image analysis and recognition, and biometrics (Signature/Writer identification/verification).

Fahimeh has a PhD in Computer Science from Griffith University. She has taught students in different age groups and has more than 10 years of teaching experience in different institutions. The focus of her research is on image processing and retrieval. She has worked on the problem of texture feature-based document image retrieval, classification, and biometric. Results and contributions of her research have been published in the form of international journal, international conferences, and workshops.

I am currently the Chair of Science at Southern Cross University. My research investigates the responses of insects (native and introduced; pests and natural enemies) to environmental extremes and rapid climatic changes. 

Jacinta has a Bachelor of Science degree with Honours and a PhD in Neuroscience from The University of Newcastle. She also obtained a Bachelor of Naturopathy from SCU in 2002. Aspa Baroutsis (PhD) is a senior lecturer and researcher at the Faculty of Education. She is known nationally for her research in media sociology, focused on portrayals of teachers, teaching, and schools across traditional print and social media; learning engagement and student voice across mainstream and alternative school settings; and digital pedagogies and school learning spaces that support student belonging and participation. Aspa has been awarded significant research income, including her current Australian Research Council Linkage grant. She has authored over 30 research publications in scholarly journals and with notable book publishers, co-authoring a number of these publications with leading scholars in the field.

Jessica is a clinical nutritionist and researcher who has worked extensively in the health and wellness industry for the past 10 years. She completed her bachelor of health science in Nutritional and Dietetic Medicine (honours) from Endeavour College of Natural Health where she developed a strong interest in research. She went on to complete her PhD at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Faculty of Health, researching in the emerging field of nutritional psychiatry. She recently conducted a clinical trial assessing the effects of a Mediterranean diet on the symptoms of depression in young men, which highlighted the powerful effect that food can have on mental health. 

Jessica is currently a Maurice Blackmore Research Fellow, in the National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine, at Southern Cross University. She is continuing her work in nutritional psychiatry, and is developing a program of research that will centre around diet and mental health, aiming to support vulnerable populations with a "food as medicine" approach.

Charmaine is a senior paediatric occupational therapist, lecturer and researcher with over two decades of early years’ experience across community, tertiary hospital and university settings. She completed her PhD on supporting pathways to autism diagnosis with the University of Melbourne in 2022, adopting an occupation-focused coaching approach with families waiting for services, Occupational Performance Coaching, which Charmaine now trains others to incorporate into clinical practice. Undergraduate and post-graduate training is a passionate area for Charmaine, who also delivers courses in autism pathways and Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP).  Her special interests include identifying strengths and barriers to supporting function and participation for children with Developmental Coordination Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and other developmental disabilities, while ensuring families are accessing the right support at the right time. Charmaine has undertaken specialist training in conducting clinical trials, managing research data and biostatistics programmes. She is a mixed-methods researcher with expertise in survey development and analysis, as well as clinical trial methodologies including feasibility studies.

Associate Professor Wendy Boyd joined Southern Cross University in February 2009 with professional expertise in the field of early childhood education and care, where she taught for 25 years. This experience has taken her into research in this field, particularly in the field of the quality of early childhood education and care. She completed her PhD in 2011, the title of which was Parent decisions regarding paid work and care of the child. Wendy has published and presented from her PhD, and collaborated to publish research involving pre-service teachers' attitudes to child care, early childhood education for sustainability, pre-service teachers' mathematics anxiety and advocacy of pre-service teachers in the field of early childhood. Her approach to teaching of pre-service early childhood teachers has been recognised through the award of a 2011 Vice Chancellor's Citation Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 25 years of early childhood professional experience, Wendy led a large staff team to consistently achieve the highest ratings in the early childhood Quality Improvement and Accreditation System. Wendy is highly regarded in the early childhood field and active with the North Coast Branch of Early Childhood Australia, actively advocating for high quality early childhood education and care for children and their families.

My name is John Broomfield and I have a wealth of experience in Business Intelligence, Data Analysis and recently completed my Master’s Degree in Data Science with James Cook University. I commenced a new role as a Technical Lead (Data) for Southern Cross Universities Data and Analytics function in November 2022. Prior to this, I managed the Data Team for Australia largest smash repair company AMA Group, delivering reporting and analytics solutions for senior management along with 180 repair sites around Australia.
I can gather and document user requirements and turn them into actionable insights effectively while developing strong relationships with stakeholders regardless of seniority. I manage priorities using an agile development approach and continuous integration (CI) to deliver working software solutions, within tight budget and time constraints. I am proficient at managing happy and high performing data teams, all with specific skillsets and able to maintain their focus on desired outcomes to benefit the organisation.
 am experienced at defining measurable outcomes and compiling Data Roadmaps for Senior Management Teams, having done this in multiple recent roles. More resent experience has been using the Microsoft Data Platforms (Azure, Databricks, Synapse & Power BI). I am Australian born but have lived and worked in the US and UK. Antonia is a social anthropologist with the Centre for Children and Young People and is currently developing a new program of research which builds synergies between the interdisciplinary fields of childhood studies and tourism studies in order to advance knowledge informed by children and young people in the diverse tourism contexts of our increasingly globalising world. Antonia's previous work and research experience have developed her expertise in community wellbeing, with a particular focus on the wellbeing of children and young people. Research interests include: children's rights and participation, ethical dimensions of research with children, the anthropology of tourism and youth cultures.

Dr Leigh Carriage is an Australian composer, educator, performer, vocalist and public speaker. Leigh was awarded a Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning by the Vice Chancellor. The Citation recognised the creation and establishment of an innovative equity program (supported by a grant from HEEPSA) which provided exceptional support for music students in their development as original artists. Leigh recorded an album Mandarin Skyline in Sydney at Studio 301, all of the original compositions were mixed and mastered in LA by Grammy Award winning Engineer, Helik Hadar. From 2005-2014 she was SCU Foundation Professor of Aged Services and Director of the ASLaRC Aged Services Unit.

Her main areas of research have focussed on ageing issues, plus medical decisions at the end of life.  Professor Cartwright conducted several population-based studies into medical decisions at the end of life, including one in the Northern Territory while the Rights of the Terminally Ill Act was in place there (the first place in the world to pass legislation allowing both euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide). She led the Australian arm of a study into medical decisions at the end of life, in conjunction with 6 European countries.

Professor Cartwright designed the Advance Care Directive and Enduring Power of Attorney documents that became part of the Qld Powers of Attorney Act 1998.

She has over 100 refereed publications, including journal articles, book chapters and reports to government and the aged care industry.

I am the responsible for the stable isotope laboratory of the centre for coastal biogeochemistry. I have developed a new method to measure planktonic respiration in the light.

Southern Cross University Nurse Practitioner Clinic. Clinical specialty working with people with autism, their families, and service providers for people with autism such as school staff. Research focus is autism, intellectual disability and Advanced Practice Nursing.

Associate Professor Michael Charles is a member of the School of Business and Tourism at Southern Cross University. He is currently the School Director Higher Degree Research and the Coordinator of the Doctor of Business Administration, as well as a member of the School Executive and SCU’s Higher Degree Research Committee. He has a PhD from the University of Queensland and a Master of International Business Studies from the Queensland University of Technology. He has published over 80 refereed journal articles, together with numerous book chapters and refereed conference papers. His current research mainly focuses on infrastructure policy (particularly pertaining to transport), public values and infrastructures, research policy, collaboration and engagement between industry and academia, and history (mainly of the ancient world, with a particular interest in ancient Persia, elephants in warfare and ancient sexuality). He is also increasingly interested in research pertaining to the supervision of HDR candidates.

Aidan Coleman is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education and also teaches in the Associate Degree of Creative Writing. His research and scholarship spans Australian literature, Shakespeare, poetry, ecocriticism and creative writing. He is the co-author of a series of Shakespeare textbooks and his poetry volumes have been shortlisted for national literary awards. Aidan has extensive experience as a secondary English and history teacher, and faculty coordinator, and he has received a National Excellence in Teaching Award (NEiTA).

Born in New Zealand and based in Australia, Grayson Cooke is an interdisciplinary scholar and media artist, Associate Professor in the School of Arts and Social Sciences at Southern Cross University. Grayson has presented media art and live audio-visual performance works in Australia and internationally, and he has exhibited and performed in major international festivals such as the Japan Media Arts Festival, NeMaf in Seoul, VIDEOFORMES in France, TIVA in Taipei, and the FILE Festival in Sao Paulo. As a scholar he has published widely in academic journals, and he is an associate editor for the online peer-reviewed journal Transformations. He holds an interdisciplinary PhD from Concordia University in Montreal.

Introduction

I arrived at SCU for  first semester 2008 and ended my continuing position late 2017. I am currently an adjunct lecturer. I am a writer and have worked as an editor. I’ve taught semester-long writing subjects at the University of Canberra (a subject I wrote) online, the University of Adelaide (a subject I wrote), and Flinders University. I have given single seminars at the universities of Western Sydney and South Australia. I have taught writing at TAFE and to community groups.

Subject matter: writing and visual art, scriptwriting, Atlantic salve trade, Picasso, Gothic/Noir, coastal living, storytelling and community transformation. Examined approximately 8 + PhDs and as many Masters (from universities of Canberra, New South Wales, Western Sydney, Adelaide, Victoria, Deakin, CQU, SQU, La Trobe, RMIT).

Honours: Supervised four theses to first-class, and three more. Subject matter: children’s writing, experimental writing, digital technologies (and realism and familial relationships), film script (non-horror serial murder), and short stories (community/place/loss). Examined many theses from Griffith University, the University of Adelaide, SCU etc.

Community Engagement

Amy Cutter-Mackenzie-Knowles (BEd Hons Griffith, PhD CQU) is a Professor of Sustainability, Environment and Education at Southern Cross University, Faculty of Education, Australia. She is the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Education, as well as the Research Leader of the Sustainability, Environment and the Arts in Education (SEAE) Research Cluster. She has led over 40 research projects in environmental education and published over 150 publications largely centred on ontologies in/as nature through posthuman philosophy. She has a particular interest in child-framed arts-based research methodologies. Amy has also been recognised for both her teaching and research excellence in environmental education, including an OLT Teaching Excellence Award, Citation and the Australian Association for Environmental Education Fellowship (Life Achievement Award) for her outstanding contribution to environmental education research. 

Dr Caitilin de Berigny has published and exhibited widely internationally. She has worked and studied in Paris and Marseille in France and in Seattle in the USA. Her PhD examined how the genre of documentary transforms in video installation via the processes of intertextuality and détournement. She has a degree in Visual Art (Honours) from the Australian National University and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts Paris, as well as a post-graduate Diploma in New Media Communications from the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts Marseille, France and a PhD in Communications from Canberra University.

Earle is a former Adjunct Professor at IDEAS, SCU, NSW, and is now an Adjunct Professional Fellow at SCU; an appointed Fellow, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Spain; and since 1984 has been an elected Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, London.

Awarded a Masters by Research (equivalence), by the School of Management, College of Business, RMIT University, Melbourne, for his extensive success in developing executive education programs, Earle set aside a planned Arctic expedition to enter a PhD program (currently deferred but with ongoing research) to develop a new theoretical approach to leadership based on 40 years of Harvard research into higher adult development and the new field of Postformal Psychology. This promises to have worldwide practical application, and is aimed at Leadership for futures of massive uncertainty during climate catastrophe. Earle has presented his early research findings as an invited plenary speaker at international conferences in Germany and Romania.

His ground-breaking leadership of Australia’s first Arctic expedition, during 1985-86, was an extraordinarily complex $2.5 million (2022) project. Its operation involved eight countries, British royalty, prominent Australian and UK business, political and social leaders, scientific organisations, and a range of commercial sponsors.

In 1987 Earle was appointed Director of the Tall Ships spectacular where the Prime Minister officially opened Australia’s 1988 Bicentenary. It involved management of 500 volunteers, four city councils, plus State and Federal governments and, with more than 1.5 million visitors, was the biggest staged event in Victoria’s history.

Kay Dimmock: PhD (SCU), M.Ed (USQ), B.Bus Tourism (Hons)(SCU). Kay has extensive experience teaching and researching within the School of Business and Tourism across 24 units at post graduate and undergraduate levels ranging from business management and strategy to leisure experiences and marine tourism. She has published in various peer reviewed journals including A*, individually and collaboratively written book chapters and contributed to industry based technical reports - in areas including management competencies in tourism education, managing tourism operations, international tourism trends and risk management in outdoor adventure. She works collaboratively with marine tourism stakeholders at regional and local levels. Kay supervises post graduate research students including in marine tourism, scuba diving tourism, teaching and education in tourism and adventure leisure.

Dr Georgina Dimopoulos is a Senior Lecturer in Law. She is experienced in legal and policy evaluation, and doctrinal, qualitative and empirical research, across the areas of family law, children's rights, privacy and family violence.

Georgina's research has been published in leading Australian and international peer-reviewed journals. Her first monograph, Decisional Privacy and the Rights of the Child (Routledge, 2022), presents a new model for enabling and listening to children’s voices in decision-making processes.

Georgina is a Children’s Rights Trainer with the Diplomacy Training Program and a member of the Policy Working Group of the Australian Child Rights Taskforce. She was admitted to legal practice in 2010 and practised at Allens Arthur Robinson (now Allens Linklaters).

Georgina has worked as a Senior Associate to a Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria, a Senior Legal Policy Officer at the Victorian Department of Justice and Community Safety, and a Research Fellow in the Family Law, Family Violence and Elder Abuse team at the Australian Institute of Family Studies. She has also been engaged as a legal consultant to the Victorian Family Law Pathways Network and Women with Disabilities Victoria. Georgina has also held the roles of Lecturer at Swinburne Law School, Swinburne University of Technology; Teaching Fellow at Melbourne Law School; and Sessional Lecturer at La Trobe Law School.

Georgina holds a PhD in Law, a Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours) and a Bachelor of Arts (Media and Communications), from the University of Melbourne.

I have been a nurse since 1979 and a midwife since 1990. I have taught nursing and midwifery in both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Australia and China. My research interests involve the provision of woman-centred care for all childbearing women regardless of the midwifery context in which their care is provided. My other research interest involves educational strategies that will support graduate midwives and nurses to implement woman/patient-centred care into their practice.

Emma works in the Grants and Contracts Team in the Office of Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) at SCU. She has a Bachelor of Arts Degree (University of Sydney) and has worked at SCU for approximately 22 years in a variety of research support and management roles.

Alan's 30+ years in Education include primary and secondary teaching, Sport Coordinator, School Co-Ordinator and Acting Deputy Principal as well as teaching at Griffith University with the School of Education. An accomplished musician, he has played guitar and sung on campus since 2006 with the Desperados Band. Alan is also a keen sportsman involved with surfing, athletics, rugby league and has played State Level Touch Football.

Alan has been an Academic with SCU since 2006 teaching with School of Education, PSP and Social Science as well as a short time with Sport Management and Surfing Studies. Alan was a vital  part of the PSP Teaching Team that gained the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence and Achievement as part of the Preparing for
Success Program 2007 which included a National Citation. He describes himself as a classroom practitioner.

Alan is also a member of the International Advisory Board of Education, Research and Innovation, Seville, Spain.

His Doctoral Study draws on ideas from the Activity Theory by Engestrom (developed in part from Vygotsky’s work) and is specifically in the area of Student Engagement and Retention at University. Alan's Research investigates, but is not limited to, students’ learning capabilities and success via Online, On Campus and Blended methods at University.

Although primarily a classroom practitioner, Professor Fenn- Lavington has a solid recent Research Portfolio that includes acceptance for presentations and/or publications at JCU Conference Townsville QLD; Flinders University SA; ICERI Conference, Seville Spain ; APIAR Research Conference Indonesia and Oxford University in August  2022.

Monica Gagliano is a Research Associate Professor in evolutionary ecology at Southern Cross University where she directs the Biological Intelligence (BI) Lab as part of the Diverse Intelligences Initiative of the Templeton World Charity Foundation. She has pioneered the brand-new research field of plant bioacoustics, for the first time experimentally demonstrating that plants emit their own ‘voices’ and detect and respond to the sounds of their environments. Her work has extended the concept of cognition (including perception, learning processes, memory) in plants. By demonstrating experimentally that learning is not the exclusive province of animals, she has re-ignited the discourse on plant subjectivity and ethical and legal standing. Inspired by encounters with Nature and indigenous elders from around the world, she applies a progressive and holistic approach to science – one that is comfortable engaging at the interface between areas as diverse as ecology, physics, law, anthropology, philosophy, literature, music and the arts, and spirituality. By re-kindling a sense of wonder for this beautiful place we call home, she is helping to create a fresh imaginative ecology of mind that can inspire the emergence of truly innovative solutions to human relations with the world we co-inhabit. Her latest book is Thus Spoke the Plant (North Atlantic Books, 2018).

Alana is a Pakana (Tasmanian Aboriginal) woman from the north-east coast of lutruwita (Tasmania), and more recently, the Bass Strait Islands of Cape Barren and Flinders Island. Alana is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the National Cnetre for Naturopathic Medicine. She is developing a research program that will centre around First Nations Australians traditional medicines and healing practices, aiming to protect and preserve these medicines for future generations, and improve accessibility for all First Nations communities across Australia. Alana is passionate about Indigenous peoples' holistic health and wellbeing, globally. She believes that the wellbeing and identity of Indigenous peoples are strongly centred around strong connections to Country/land, culture, spirituality and each other.

She has over eleven years’ experience in research, research translation, community engagement, health education and clinical consultation. She has a background in Nutritional Medicine and completed a Master by Research with a focus on Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine use by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cancer patients and, more specifically, the disclosure of this use to their cancer healthcare professionals, and completed her PhD titled “Exploring Wellbeing from Indigenous Perspectives”. Her work focussed primarily on wellbeing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, but also included a focus on the domains of wellbeing for Indigenous peoples in Canada, Aotearoa (New Zealand) and the United States. Alana's work is grounded in decolonising research approaches, including Indigenist research methods with a strengths-based focus.

Alana has strong experience in qualitative methodologies, data analysis and syntheses. She has extensive experience with Indigenist and decolonising methodologies, with a focus on strengths-based approaches that privilege the voices of First Nations peoples. She pioneered the use of individual yarns with a think-aloud component, called ‘think-aloud yarns’, that explored the suitability and acceptability of the think-aloud method with First Nations peoples (under peer review), and provided the face and content validity of draft statements for a wellbeing measure under development. She has experience with Traditional Indigenous medicine, both academically and within the education space, and this is the focus of her current research fellowship. Alana has an extensive and broad knowledge in First Nations health, wellbeing, Traditional Indigenous medicines and foods, qualitative, Indigenist and decolonising methodologies and methods.

Rob Garbutt is an Associate Professor in Cultural Studies and Written Communication at the School of Arts and Social Sciences. His research takes an interdisciplinary cultural studies approach to issues of place, identity and belonging. Much of this work takes place with community members, or in collaboration with other researchers. His publications have focused on "settler" identity (for example in two books The locals and Inside Australian culture), explorations of relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians (in journals such as History and Anthropology and Cosmopolitan Civil Societies), and relationships in place between human and more-than-human inhabitants (in Continuum, Coolabah, M/C Journal and Transformations). In each instance, it is place, belonging and identity that are contexts for matters of concern.

Dr Emma Gentle is a researcher and an art therapist. Emma completed her PhD (USyd) on the capacity of group art-making processes to form connection. She has a MA in Art Therapy (UWS) where she researched the impact of art therapy on incarcerated young people, and explored identity through art-making processes. Emma also completed a MA in Applied Anthropology, Community and Youth Work (GU), with a dissertation on the efficacy of community arts projects in creating individual and social change. She completed under graduate diplomas in both psychology and applied psychology (BU). Emma’s research explores the capacity of art and creativity to improve mental health and promote wellbeing. In practice, Emma utilises art processes to: 1) cultivate unencumbered expression of difficult feelings; 2) for story-telling; 3) to increase connection; 4) to reduce stigma; and 5) as a creative recovery tool. 

Emma’s current work focuses on the impact of recent disasters on indviduals and their communities, pre-school children and young people with complex trauma backgrounds, families experiencing D.V, and people with mild and complex support requirements through the NDIS. Her previous work predominantly concentrated on using art processes to improve the mental-health of children, young people and families in Australia, UK and Mexico.

Reza’s research interest includes human-computer interaction, innovative application of technology in various context, IT innovation adoption, and evolutionary computation and he has published several publications in these fields. Reza has a background in software engineering and information systems, and teaches software development and user experience units to undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Brief Biographical Details
A former Malaysian Rhodes Scholar, Professor Bee Chen Goh is a Fellow and Director of the Australian Academy of Law. She specialized in International Law at Cambridge, and is a Fellow of the Cambridge Commonwealth Society. She was a Visiting Researcher at the Harvard Law School in the Summer of 1993. Bee Chen is also a Fellow of the Society for Advanced Legal Studies, London.

Bee Chen was Head of School, School of Law and Justice at Southern Cross University (2006-2009). Currently the School Director of Research & Research Training, and Director of the Centre for Peace and Social Justice, Bee Chen is also a Member of the University's Inter-Faith Committee. She currently serves on the Queensland Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee.

In the field of Chinese Negotiation (also the focus of her doctoral thesis), Bee Chen has published, and presented papers in Australia, New Zealand, the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Norway. Bee Chen is well-versed in English, Mandarin, Malay/Indonesian and Hokkien (Taiwanese). His research interests currently encompass improving the management uses of nest and roost boxes (artificial hollows) for wildlife, determining whether specialised road crossing structures for gliding mammals are effective, and how to manage threatened species such as the broad-headed snake and eastern pygmy-possum within National Parks.

With a Masters degree in Adult Education from UTS and a post-graduate qualification in Career Development and Education from RMIT, I’ve assisted clients of varied backgrounds ranging from high school students seeking pathways to Higher Ed and VET, people re-entering the workforce and mid-career changers. Positively supporting people to understand the world of work in the 21st century as well as develop their employability skills is one of the most rewarding functions of my role.

Gillian Gould is Professor in Health Equity and is currently completing an NHMRC Translating Research into Practice (TRIP) Fellow, co-funded by Cancer Institute NSW, at Southern Cross University. She is an active vocationally registered GP with >30 years' experience, and a Tobacco Treatment Specialist. Her clinical work is at the Coffs Harbour Refugee Health Clinic which she co-founded in 2006. Previously a founding academic at UNSW Faculty of Medicine Rural Clinical School 2002-11, Head of Campus Rural Clinical school, senior research fellow. Gould is committed to supporting regional research.

Anne Graham is Professor of Childhood Studies and Founding Director of the Centre for Children and Young People at Southern Cross University. A primary school teacher and sociologist by background, Anne has worked in teacher education for 20 years and was Head of the School of Education at Southern Cross University from 2005-2009. Anne also holds a conjoint Professorial appointment at the University of New South Wales. In her capacity as Director of the Centre for Children and Young People, Anne has led over 60 research projects, including 7 Australian Research Council funded studies, most of which focus on children’s rights, wellbeing and safety. While Anne collaborates closely with education systems, she also leads projects involving other major state and Commonwealth government departments, key statutory bodies, major national and international NGOs, and many regionally based organisations providing programs and services to children. Anne’s research, which emphasises the critical importance of hearing children’s views, has been recognised by numerous awards, including most recently an Officer of the Order of Australia (2018) for her contribution to higher education in the area of childhood studies and children’s research. Anne serves on several key advisory bodies and is a Key Institution Director for the Childwatch International Research Network. While Anne has published extensively in scholarly journals and books, she also ensures her research culminates in ‘plain English’ research summaries, websites, ‘good practice’ guidelines, webinars, professional learning workshops, and education programs, to help ensure the research is accessible and relevant to those who can best use it. Anne is the author of the highly successful Seasons for Growth program, which provides children, young people and adults with knowledge and skills to adapt to significant change in family life following death, separation, divorce and other loss experiences. This not-for-profit program, sponsored by Good Grief Ltd, is now in its 3rd edition, with over 270,000 children, young people and adults, in 5 countries, having participated in the program. Anne continues to train and support hundreds of adult Companions who facilitate the program in schools and community settings.

Iain Graham, Professor of Healthcare Development, is the current Dean and Head of School for Health and Human Sciences. He is also the Director of Clinical Services overseeing the University Health Clinic.

Professor Graham has been in this role since April 2007. Prior to this appointment, Iain was the Dean of Health at the Institute of Health and Community Studies, and Professor of Nursing, at Bournemouth University, UK.

Iains role is to lead the evolution of the School at Southern Cross University, and position it so that the School can meet the major changes, and challenges, expected in the 21st Century for both the Health Service and Higher Education as it pertains to the health professions.

It should be noted that every health care system in the world, and by inference, every University which hosts a Nursing, Allied Health or Medical School, is facing reform and change. The worlds demographic and epidemiological profile is moving. Consumer expectation is rising, and every government seeks to provide a cost effective, quality based, and safe health care system. Therefore, Professor Graham is positioning the School so that it can work with such change, and re-position itself for an exciting future. Dr Mellie Green has been a primary school teacher for over 25 years, with 20 of those in the classroom and teacher-librarianship, and five in curriculum leadership. She completed her PhD in 2021. Her doctoral research explored student engagement in reading for enjoyment in the upper primary years. Her areas of research passion are: use of children’s literature in the primary classroom, reading instruction, curriculum and pedagogy.  She is a Literacy and English teaching lecturer with a love of high-quality children’s books. Mellie is also an active member of the Departing Radically in Academic Writing (DRAW) group.

Jennifer Harrison BBus (with Dist.) Hons I, University Medal (SCU) PhD (UNE) is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Business and Tourism at the Gold Coast Campus. She has over 20 years higher education experience and was recognised as a 2021 Southern Cross University Inspiring Educator. During 2016 and 2017, Jennifer managed the SCU Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Professional Accounting (MPA) programs and earlier service positions include Department Head of Accounting, Finance and Quantitative Methods, School Director of Higher Degrees Research Training, and Honours Coordinator. She has experience in not-for-profit governance, having served as a voluntary board member. During her academic career, Jennifer has taught business finance, managerial economics, research methods, quantitative methods and accounting at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Prior to entering academia, she held accounting positions in the advertising industry. Jennifer has over 40 research publications in entrepreneurship, strategy, management, accounting, finance and marketing, reflecting her multidisciplinary understanding of business. As methodological consultant and data analyst, she has also been actively involved in a wide range of consulting projects across a variety of industries including banking, agriculture, software development and sport and fitness and for firms such as Microsoft and the Chandler McLeod Group. Dr Harrison’s current research interests are focused on financial literacy, financial well-being, financial advisor anxiety and, in the context of accounting and finance education, maths anxiety. She supervises a number of higher degree research students in related topics.

Dr Barry Hill is a musician and music researcher. As a bass player and guitarist, Dr Hill has peformed and recorded with many popular music ensembles, theatre and dance groups and multimedia projects both in Australia and overseas. His published research specialises in the fields of popular music culture and performance practice, audio technology and musicology. Dr Hill currently holds the position of Senior Lecturer at Southern Cross University School of Arts and Social Sciences.and teaches into the SCU Bachelor of Contemporary Music Undergraduate program.

Matt Hill is a Senior Lecturer for the Bachelor of Contemporary Music at Southern Cross University. He completed a PhD at James Cook University with a practice-based study researching the influence of new technologies on music creation in a variety of genres from historical, analytical and personal practice perspectives. His research interests include collaborative music making processes, film music, music analysis and musician careers. Matt is a composer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist and has worked in a wide range of contemporary music contexts. He is the keyboard player and sound-scape co-designer with the group amphibian, with whom he has toured to the UK and throughout Australia. He won the NCIEA Dolphin album of the year award for his solo album "Warm Keep Warm" and has received Australia Council for the Arts grants with amphibian. His most recent album, "Sombre Mountain", was released in 2021.

Dr. Wes Hill is an art historian, art critic, curator and artist who lectures in art theory and visual culture studies. Speciality research areas include modern, postmodern and contemporary art, the hipster, and the delimitation of critical/aesthetic/ethical taste in cultural practice. His most recent publications are "Art after the Hipster: Identity Politics, Ethics and Aesthetics" (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017) and "How Folklore Shaped Modern Art: A Post-Critical History of Aesthetics" (Routledge, 2016). His writing is regularly published in magazines and journals such as Artforum, Frieze, Broadsheet, Eyeline, Artlink and Art and Australia. Wes has been awarded multiple Australia Council for the Arts grants, in 2004, 2008 and 2012, as well as multiple Arts Queensland grants, in 2004, 2006, 2012. In 2008 he was awarded the Art Gallery of New South Wales Dyason Bequest, for which he undertook a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris. Curated exhibitions include "Archie Moore" (NCCA, Darwin) "Outside Thoughts" (CAT, Hobart) "This is what I do" (Metro Arts, Brisbane), and 'Speech Acts' (UTS Gallery, Sydney). As an artist he specialises in the medium of installation, collaborating with Wendy Wilkins as ‘Wilkins Hill’ at institutions such as Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, Artspace (Sydney), and the Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane.

Following a long career as a professional musician, composer and entertainer, and a period working for the Australian and UK governments, Owen now lectures in business and creative arts at Southern Cross University. Owen teaches and consults in areas of entrepreneurship, service innovation, strategy, and design thinking. Owen has published research in fields such as entrepreneurship, strategic management, higher education policy and small business innovation. Owen has also founded two successful creative industries businesses.

Dr Louise Horstmanshof (BA, GradDipApPsych, MOrgPsych, PhD) has been researching and publishing for over 20 years with a focus on person-centred ageing and aged care.  She led two Australian Department of Health (formerly HWA) grant projects for Southern Cross University. These projects were aimed at increasing student placements in Primary Health Care settings and with older adults. Despite not being a research project, Dr Horstmanshof published the positive findings for both Nursing and Allied Health students and older adults from this community engagement project. With her team Dr Horstmanshof was awarded a community engagement award for this work.

From her experience of working with students and their supervisors to prepare health-work students for practice, she has developed a keen understanding of the explicit and implicit expectations and requirements of the various stakeholders and how to best manage these. This skill is key to maximising the outcomes of such interactions and relationships. She is published in this area of training and preparation of health workers.

The Realist Evaluation of the Dementia Literacy Toolkit Project on behalf on the North Coast PHN was published and has been cited in The World Health Organisation (WHO) (Rowland et al, (2019) Report on Health Evidence. Particular mention was made of the mixed methods approach and the used of the Health Literacy Questionnaire.  It was a good example of co-design and co-production of resources and demonstrated that this “not about us, without us” collaborative approach

Louise has held several leadership roles in the university.  She was the Chair of School Board for the School of Health and Human Sciences from 2019-2021. Currently she is in Psychology in the Faculty of Health and is the Unit Assessor for Development Across the Lifespan (Bachelor of Psychological Sciences) and Applied Research and Evaluation for the Psychological Scientist-Practitioner in the Psychology Honours Degree. Louise is a strong advocate for Interprofessional teaching and learning. She supervises several PhD students and also supervisors students from the Psychology Honours Degree.

Katie Hotko is an Associate Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at Southern Cross University. Katie is the Unit Assessor of CRTV1001 Creativity and the Arts. She is also an active member of the SEAE (Sustainability, Environmental, and Arts Education) Research Cluster. Katie is in the final stages of her PhD exploring Primary Teachers’ self-beliefs about creativity, and how these beliefs affect their teaching of the Visual Arts. Katie is a self-taught artist who is passionate about making the Visual Arts accessible to all people. Through the lens of process philosophy and a/r/tography, her inquiry delves into the becoming of the creative self-identities of practising generalist primary teachers in the Visual Arts. 

Dr. Ya-Ling Huang has her Masters and PhD in Nursing, and is a registered nurse in Australia and overseas. She is a teaching and research academic, Faculty of Health (Nursing Discipline) at the Southern Cross University and a visiting research fellow at the Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service (GCHHS) as well as an adjunct research fellow at the Griffith University with various experiences in clinical, education and research. She was previously awarded for Nursing and Midwifery Professional Recognition Program -RN Expert Level, GCHHS. 

Previously, she has worked as a research coordinator and clinical nurse researcher (emergency department) at the GCHHS and has successfully mentored clinicians and nursing students in clinical research and published in peer-review journals. She has also worked as a registered nurse in various acute and subacute clinical areas. 

She has been involved in research projects which have attracted more than a quarter of a million dollars in research grants and award as a principal and associate investigator. Her research interests focus on clinical research in acute care settings and research evidence-based practice.

Key research topics: Acute Care (Emergency; Respiratory), Sub-acute Care (Palliative; End of Life; Chronic Care), Vulnerable Populations (Older People; Cultural and Linguistic Diversity), Research Evidence-based Practice, Qualitative and Mixed-Methods Research and Cultural and Social Aspects.

Mark Hughes is a social worker and has worked in health, aged care and mental health settings in both Australia and the UK. He has also worked as a social work academic at the University of Queensland, the University of New South Wales, and Goldsmiths College, University of London. He is a former Dean of Arts and Social Sciences and Chair of Academic Board at Southern Cross University. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of the Australasian Journal on Ageing.

Mark's research interests centre around ageing and the delivery of health and aged care services to older people. He has completed research projects on conflict and violence in care-giving relationships involving older people, dementia and care-giving, older people's transitions through health and community care systems, and educational initiatives to facilitate reflective practice with older people. In addition to work on ageing, Mark has also published more broadly on social work and social work education.

He is currently engaged in a program of research on ageing in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) communities, which has involved projects on sexual identity expression in health and aged care, lesbian and gay people's experiences and expectations in accessing services, and the care networks of older LGBTQ+ people.
