Brief Biographical Details
Sam Garkawe is an Associate Professor at the School of Law and Justice at Southern Cross University, NSW. Sam completed his Law Degree at Monash University, Melbourne, and is a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria. He has been employed in a number of legal environments, including private practice, legal aid, as a research solicitor for the Victorian parliament, and has been an academic since 1991. He further holds Masters of Law degrees from both London University and Sydney University, and is also admitted as an Attorney-at-Law in California.
Sam has taught International Criminal Law/Justice in a number of places around the world - Monash University (Melbourne); Hamline University School of Law, Minneapolis (Minnesota, USA); Tel Aviv (Israel); Whittier School of Law and Chapman University School of Law, (California, USA); and Murdoch University (Perth).
In 2009 Sam was elected to the Executive Committee of the World Society of Victimology and has been an active member of their UN Liaison Committee since 2003. He has published widely in the field of victimology, particularly with respect to the role of victims in international criminal justice mechanisms, such as the International Criminal Court and the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Membership and involvement with Professional and Academic Organisations
Australasian Society of Victimology - Appointed to the executive Committee in May 2000, appointed as President in 2007.
Life member, World Society of Victimology - Member of the Academic Committee of the 8th International Symposium on Victimology, held in Adelaide, August 1994 & appointed to UN liaison Committee in July 2003, to its Awards Committee in 2006 and in early 2008 to the academic Advisory Committee for the 2009 International Symposium held in Mito, Japan in August 2009. Elected to the Executive in 2009, and appointed as Deputy-Chair of the UN liaison Committee in December 2009. In 2010 was appointed Chair of Standards and Norms Committee.
International Commission of Jurists up to 2006 - Brisbane branch, appointed to the Board in 2004, 2005 & 2006.
Full member of the Centre for Social Justice and Peace (formerly the Centre for Cultural Diversity and Social Justice and formerly Law, Politics and Culture), Southern Cross University.

On the 23 September 2008 Sam was awarded the Annual Victim Support Australasia Annual Prize for 2008. This was ‘In recognition of his Outstanding Leadership in Advancing the Academic Discipline of Victimology in Australia, and in Promoting International Recognition of Victims Rights’.
