Bill is the Professor of Geography at SCU and Deputy Chair of the University's Human Research Ethics Committee. He is the university's Student Ombud. He a geographer, archaeologist and landscape scientist, with scholarly interests in environmental change, human-landscape interactions, environmental and cultural heritage management, and higher education.
As an education researcher, Bill uses reflective narrative and small group mentoring methods to examine pedagogy, curriculum and teaching & learning practice. He is currently working on issues of student learning processes, mathematics education, and school leadership.
He has published extensively in all his areas, and has co-authored several books, including textbooks in environmental management. He holds doctorates from the Universities of Glasgow and St Andrews, is a Life Fellow of Clare Hall, University of Cambridge, and a Visiting Professor at the Australian Studies Centre, University of Barcelona.
