Have you ever dreamed on going on a virtual reality holiday? Or ever wondered whether stress can be measured in real time?

Southern Cross University will showcase revolutionary technology in the new Digital Enterprise Lab in a showcase event during the inaugural Gold Coast Business Week, open to the public on Wednesday May 16.

Project demonstrations will include taking a virtual tour of a thriving holiday destination; highlighting team outcomes from the recent innovation challenge partnership with Gold Coast Airport; and the intelligent sensing of human physiology, which gives a real-time measure of a person’s health and productivity including their stress levels and how they best learn.

IT discipline leader Professor Dian Tjondronegoro said the Digital Enterprise Lab was equipped with some of the latest mobile wearable sensors and augmented reality devices, including lightweight wearable sensors to monitor physiological signals, such as heart rate, galvanic skin response and EEG. These technologies can help identifying patterns to discover current emotion, cognitive load and perceived stress.

“Studies using this technology will have a profound impact on businesses that rely on the use of big data for insights on how to improve the quality of customer experiences and could inform major business and operational decisions in areas such as health, tourism, commerce and education,” said Professor Tjondronegoro.

“During our Business Week showcase we will perform a demonstration so volunteers can interact with the technology, including a simple test of someone’s level of focus and stress.”

Professor Tjondronegoro said Southern Cross University had the cross-disciplinary expertise for analysing data, recognising patterns, and detecting events using cutting-edge machine-learning techniques, as well as designing and developing mobile, wearable, immersive and pervasive user interactions.

“The Digital Enterprise Lab is a hub for research and experimentation with digital technology-driven innovations providing opportunities for regional start-ups and next generation IT professionals to develop and connect with international networks.

“Gold Coast Business Week will open up the Digital Enterprise Lab to introduce businesses to the possibilities of what they could achieve collaboratively and how they could transform their businesses through meeting the very people who build the technology.”

The Digital Enterprise Lab Showcase is a free event at Southern Cross University Gold Coast campus on Wednesday May 16 from 4:30pm – 7.30pm in collaboration with Gold Coast Business Week and the IT Forum Gold Coast. To register, visit www.itforumgoldcoast.com.au/events

Southern Cross University offers a range of business degrees including the new Bachelor of Digital Business, and will launch the Master of Information Technology in late 2018.
