Byron Writers Festival

Southern Cross is a founding partner of the Byron Writers Festival and is proud to support the 2022 Festival. This year the theme is ‘Radical Hope,’ which will be explored across the 3-day program. You will hear from social and environmental experts on how we can tackle climate change, be uplifted by listening to our most gifted storytellers, meet talented emerging and established writers who are challenging the status quo, and hear from several Southern Cross University academics.

Just a few of the Southern Cross representatives in the main program include:

  • Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Academic Capability), Mary Spongberg, Chairing “The Past is Us in Funny Clothes” with Anna Clark and Eleanor Limprecht.
  • Jeanti St Clair, Media and Journalism Lecturer, chairing “Women in Media” with Julia Baird, Wendy McCarthy, and Mawunyo Gbogboand.
  • Lynda Hawryluk, Coordinator of the Associate Degree of Creative Writing who will introduce the “Poetry Showcase” with Evelyn Araluen, David Hallett, Sarah Holland-Batt, Thando Sibanda, and Anne-Marie Te Whiu.
  • Judy Atkinson, Southern Cross University Emeritus Professor, discussing “Indigenous Healing” with Paul Callaghan, and Marcia Langton, chaired by Cheryl Leavy.
