Southern Cross University and PASER are honoured to host the 2024 Australasian Skill Acquisition Network Conference (ASAN). Held on our vibrant Gold Coast campus, the ASAN conference will provide a unique opportunity for researchers, practitioners, and students to engage in thought-provoking discussions, share insights, and explore innovative strategies in the field of skill acquisition.
Connect: Network with leading experts and like-minded professionals in skill acquisition.
Learn: Discover the latest research and practical applications in skill acquisition.
Collaborate: Explore opportunities for collaboration and contribute to the advancement of the field.
Join us for two days of keynotes, presentations, and workshops designed to foster knowledge sharing and community building.
Call for Abstracts
Key Dates
Abstracts open: Monday, 24th June 2024 at 9 am
Abstracts close: Monday, 14th October 2024 at 5 pm
Presentation Types
Standard: A 12-minute timeslot to deliver a presentation on your research project.
Gimme 5: A concise format that challenges you to communicate key points about your project in 5 minutes and 3 slides. The Gimme 5 is perfect for sharing new ideas, early-stage research, or thought-provoking concepts in a quick and impactful manner.
Symposia: A series of thematically related talks that your team/group delivers over 45 minutes. Each symposium provides a platform for a deep dive into a specific topic area. The idea of this presentation type is to encourage lively discussions and meaningful debate.
Audience Q&A will follow each presentation type.
How do I submit an abstract?
All submissions need to include the following information:
- Your name (or your team’s name for a symposium)
- Your institution
- The title of your presentation/session
- A 250-word abstract describing your presentation/session. Note: Symposiums are permitted up to 500 words.
- A biographical note (if necessary)
Registration fee
Registration is $175 or $125 for students. To access the student rate voucher code, please email kyle.bennett@scu.edu.au
What is the program?
We will upload the program shortly following the abstract close date.
Are there planned social events?
Certainly! At the end of each day, there will be a social gathering at a local venue so that you can connect with other attendees. We will confirm the details of these social events closer to the conference.
Keynote speakers
Dr Job Fransen
Is skill acquisition science credible or incredible?
In this talk, Job paints a picture of the interplay between scientific rigour (credibility) and the need for ‘sensational’ research that keeps skill acquisition science marketable and relevant (incredible). Can we have both? Can we be both credible and incredible, and what will it take? Throughout this presentation, Job will outline some issues we face in skill acquisition science, what we need to do to overcome them, and how we can make skill acquisition science the most credible of all the sports and exercise science disciplines.
Job is a senior lecturer at Charles Sturt University. His work explores the nature and state of scientific evidence in skill acquisition science and what we can do to ensure our worth is rigorous, transparent and reproducible. To do so, Job blends a wealth of practical and research experience in motor development, skill acquisition and meta-science.
Professor Mark Williams
Effective Practice and Instruction: A Skill Acquisition Framework for Excellence
Skilled coaching necessitates a close integration between craft and professional knowledge. In this talk, Mark will extend the practitioner’s professional knowledge while paying due respect to the importance of the coach’s intuition and craft in applying this knowledge. He will highlight five key action points that coaches should reflect on in designing and delivering practice sessions. Mark will present these points as a framework for effectively applying skill acquisition principles in practice. The framework and associated action points consider divergent theoretical perspectives. Still, they are also meta-theoretical and pay due weight to the fact that effective coaching is as much an art as it is a science. The talk should be of interest to coaches and to skill acquisition practitioners working in applied contexts.
Professor Williams is a distinguished academic with over 30 years of experience, publishing across fields like sports science, psychology, neuroscience, and medicine. He has authored numerous books, supervised doctoral students, and mentored post-doctoral fellows. He is the Editor-in-Chief of multiple prestigious journals and has delivered keynote talks in 32 countries. With around $15 million in research funding, his collaborations span from academia to sports organisations and government agencies worldwide.
Ms Leanne Choo
Replicating Success: Struggles from an Olympic Coach in Skill Acquisition Research
In this talk, Leanne explores her transition from elite athlete to high-performance coach, focussing on the critical role of skill acquisition and her quest for reliable scientific evidence. She delves into the challenges of moving from practical coaching to incorporating research, sharing insights from her scoping review and the realisation that many studies lack robust replication. Leanne addresses the pressing question of whether current skill acquisition research is trustworthy for practical use, examines how practitioners assess the credibility of studies, and investigates the replicability of seminal research.
Leanne is a two-time Olympic athlete and Olympic coach. She is in her first year of PhD study, focusing on the reliability and applicability of skill acquisition research, particularly through replication studies. With a unique blend of Olympic-level experience as both an athlete and coach, she is deeply invested in ensuring that the research she uses is rigorous, reliable, and applicable to positively benefit the community of high-performance athletes.
